We (Mark and Patrick) are a couple of vegan friends and business partners and recently acquired an old run-down dilapidated deli in a town located an hour from the heart of Adelaide City. Collectively, we have both worked away in small remote communities, travelled across the country, travelled and worked overseas in addition to working in volunteer run not for profit community environments.
Our project is to reinvigorate the old shack-like building to bring additional life into this community focussed township. We are looking to tidy up and restore the corner store and introduce coffee and light refreshments. We are seeking support with this ongoing project with creative skills in gardening, painting, woodwork, decoration, cooking... pretty much any creative outlet....

Goolwa, a local indigenous Ngarrindjeri word meaning elbow, is a popular tourist seaside town situated on a bend where Australia’s longest river, the River Murray, meets the sea. As two vegan friends (only friends) we have recently purchased an old dilapidated deli on the riverfront and now intend to renovate and transition the premises into a more community orientated space.
You will be able to learn about South Australia, and more importantly, the Alexandrina region, which is where Goolwa is situated. We'd be able to share handyman and building skills, cooking skills, and gardening skills amongst many others. More hands make light work!
If you are good with a paintbrush, have some handy building skills, or enjoy working in the garden, come spend some time in Australia’s first Cittaslow town, Goolwa.
There are many tasks that a workawayer can provide help with on an ongoing basis. Some of the different project include gardening and small building/restoration projects such as painting, and restoring old furniture such as chairs, old display fridges and other items that reflect the characteristic and rustic feel of the place. The garden and paths need to be developed and maintained.
You will be able to stay at a nearby premises where Mark resides and get to know the town and meet the local residents. We can cook together three to four times times a week and other days we can provide ingredients for you to cook for yourselves.
We look forward to hearing from you! - Kindly, Mark & Patrick.
Chinese (Cantonese): Fluent
Accommodation for four is available in a nearby home with vegan groceries supplied with the option for some shared meals, and of course the best coffee in town is also provided.
Expected volunteer requirements for the above are:
4-5 hours work per day for 5 days for 7 day food and accommodation.
Expected minimum stay is 3 working days.
Maximum stay is typically 1 month.
The deli premesis is on the Murray River’s edge with a bike and walking path out the front, and canoes, riverboats and small sailing craft playing on the water. It is a short bike ride to the closest surf beach, a 10-25 minute drive to alternative surf coast depending upon where you want to surf, a 30 minute drive from two esteemed wine districts, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, and a 1 hour drive from Adelaide. (2 hours by regular bus service passing through other coastal towns along the route). Should there feel the need to have a quiet night in, we have a collection of boardgames that we could get together and learn/play.
We both believe that work is important as it assists each of us to develop life skills and enables us all to make a contribution, but work must never be allowed to become a drudgery. We are open minded and non judgemental. As stated the current state of the premisis is run-down, however there will be expectations to keep the place clean and tidy as collectively we work towards improvements to the premises and gardens.
