Hi volunteers! My name is Amanda and my business parter is Lauro. I'm from Minnesota and he's from Puebla. We opened a small hostel in 2017 in Puebla city center, a beautiful colonial city. I work as a designer and he has a lot of experience in remodeling, especially painting. Together we make a great team! But we really can't say enough how this hostel has come to be such a lively place because of all the incredible support we've had from volunteers, friends and family.
The hostel receives 100-150 guests per month from all over the world, many are backpackers. It's a quiet hostel, but SOCIAL. Sometimes we host cultural events too -- live music, art shows, pop-up markets, language exchanges...
We are looking for volunteers that are willing to help out in the day-to-day. Having a hostel means a lot of constant maintenance ;) Also it's great if you like to socialize and are ready to hang out with our guests and show them around town. You'll also be guaranteed to meet some new friends this way. At Chante, we work as a team so checking-in guests and providing daily cleaning support is also needed.
I have traveled to a lot of places and even volunteered for a couple months in Mexico a few years ago. We're young (26 and 36) and really enjoy meeting new people. I am now living in London but continue managing the administrative side of the hostel. When I'm at Chante, it's for a few weeks at a time, so we may cross paths or we may not. Either way, I'll be available for any questions you may have. Lauro lives at the hostel full-time, so you'll be working most likely with him.
We can't wait to show you Puebla and also learn from you!

Puebla is a city located between a lot of great destinations all within just a couple of hours! We still have a lot of places we want to visit in the provincia and other states, like Tlaxcala, Morelos, Cuernavaca.. Pico de Orizaba, also known as Citlaltépetl (a stratovolcano) is the highest mountain in Mexico and is only 2 hours away, just outside a beautiful traditional town, Ciudad Serdan! Count on at least one of these mini road trips during your stay.
On a normal day, we shop at the Market (10-minute walk away) that is full of locals and great produce. We'd love for you to join us and see what it's like to live like a Poblano! We like to cook and depending on your interests, we can exchange some recipes. If you want to learn a salsa move or two let us know!
This is also an opportunity to improve either your Spanish or English (or both!)
We can't wait to learn from you too!
- checking-in/out guests
- shopping at the market
- light cleaning
- socializing with the guests
- social media!!
- assisting in renovations, painting, etc.
- creative projects that keep adding to the charm of this hostel
Let us know when you're arriving and we will send you directions on how to arrive from the CAPU bus station. You'll be staying in a hostel dormitory room. Count on breakfast every day. On the days we cook lunch/dinner you're welcome to join us, but it may not be every night. If a meal isn't prepared, you're welcome to use the kitchen. For prepared meals, we ask a nominal fee just to help cover the cost of groceries (10-20 pesos). It's a hostel full of people that love to cook and eat, so we like it when people share that passion with us! We eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, and try to keep a healthy diet. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions and we can accommodate!
During this time we recommend exploring neighborhoods like Analco and Centro Historico, or visiting one of the many museums or churches. They say that Puebla is the City of Angels for all the churches it has. Lots of events happen at the Convention Center just a few blocks away, check out the schedule when planning your trip! You'll also receive your own set of keys to come and go as you please. Uber is extremely economical - costing about 25 - 40 pesos for a 15 minute trip. But most places you can get to by walking.
