Experience with building, tools and wood essential.
Living with nature in nature on this beautiful West of Scotland Island. New woodlands, a medicinal herb garden, a largish and productive bio-dynamic veg garden and poly-tunnel small orchard and 3/4 built eco house.
There is always lots to do. It can be very wet and windy here but the beauty and peace of the place more than compensates for the weather. Often it is very sunny and calm. Easy to get to with public transport. Accommodation for helpers is in the caravan, the shed, a hut or camping. Composting toilet.
We are looking for creative and capable and willing people skilled in some areas be it joinery, gardening, biodyamics or/and animal care and culture. The most important skill will be flexibility self reliance and perhaps hardyness.
Lismore is a very sociable island with 170 mostly friendly inhabitants. 12 miles long and 2 miles wide there is plenty of space to explore and drink in the beautiful views of the mountains and sea all around. Ceilidhs (music and dancing), film nights in the hall, church, one shop, a primary school, singing group, native Gaelic speakers. If you play an instrument or sing even better. If you prefer peace and quiet to write or just to dream that is also great (when you are not working of course). We are very near mountains and outdoor pursuits so you can be very busy doing outdoor adventuring on your days off.
The food is great and healthy, so they tell me. Home made bread, jams, chutneys, eggs, lots of salads and veg all home grown and Bio-dynamic. Meat from our own animals is available if desired. You look after your own meals, ingredients supplied, with one communal meal per week in the main house. When you have days off you visit other places.
Do contact us to discuss our mutual suitability. We don't say yes to everyone, so don't be offended.
The West of Scotland has a unique culture. A Gaelic world, with all that that encompasses, including music, language, connection with nature, magic. The beauty of nature here has a healing affect on all those who experience it.
Our project will help you learn about building to a new standard where extra heating will be almost not needed, very eco friendly. Biodynamic gardening and farming methods add a whole new dimension to working with and for the natural world. We are both happy to help you improve your English too, should that be neccessary.
The help will vary depending on the time of year and your skills from joinery to weeding the gardens and planting and transplanting vegetables, flowers, herbs and trees, making and spreading biodynamic preparations, looking after hens, picking and processing vegetables, gathering seaweed, making and moving compost and occasional cooking, cutting rushes using machinery or scything grass to make hay. Assistance with welcoming visitors to the garden. Business skills and marketing also appreciated.
Joinery work using power tools, cleaning reclaimed wood flooring and laying parket floor. Building kitchen cabinets, and a host of other semi skilled to skilled tasks
Gaelic (Scottish): Beginner
Accommodation is in a small caravan, the hut or camping, but socialising and cooking are in the barn. Composting toilet is 200 yards away from caravan. Basic and very healthy.
Wifi is good but mobile phone signal not always there. Best to bring your own sleeping bag. Camping is also possible if you bring a tent. You can use public transport to get here via Oban, or leave you car at Port Appin and take the little ferry across to Lismore. Bikes travel for free. Oh yes, bring wellies!
