We have rebuild a small village in a remote place on São Miguel Island (Azores) with traditional techniques and need annual maintenance. We are a team of several countries and speak a lot of different languages. The aim of our project was to show how was the rural life back in the last century in the Azores. The original architecture was maintained while the interior has been adapted to modern comfort.
DIY and building projects
Creating/ Cooking family meals
The travellers will have the opportunity to learn about traditional azorian masonry techniques and materials. Also they will learn about history, social aspects and customs in a rural context. They would have the chance to discover an unique environment, luxuriant nature in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
We would need help mainly for annual maintenance:
- House painting (outdoor and indoor), using traditional pigments and applying a lime mixture on the walls.
- Cooking, for the volunteering team. As it would be quite a big group, we would need dedicated cook(s) to prepare healthy meals (breakfasts, lunches, diners). All the ingredients will be provided for the right amount of people helping.
Helpers will stay in our nice stone houses, with all necessary commodities (beds, bathroom, hot water, kitchen, etc.)
The village is located just next to a regional walking trail going to a waterfall. The sea is only 20 min away by foot. Furnas and its hot springs are 25 min by car. We provide excursions to different local sights on weekends so the helpers would have the opportunity to get to know the island. Airport is 1h20 min away.
