Hi, my name is Lisa. I am an open minded young at heart 60 something year old lady with lots of interesting stories to share about my travels around Thailand, Mexico, and the USA. I love life and have a very young mindset. I love to spend time with people much younger than myself. I spent many years in the construction industry. I was born in Pico but spent 30+ years in America. My intention is to create an off grid retreat for people to be surrounded in nature, offering massages and healing therapies.

The Quinta is about 10 mins drive from Sao Roque. Sao Roque is a busy town and many tourists spend their time there. There is a ferry and airport near here. Volunteers could take a dolphin or whale watching tour in Lajes (1 hour drive). There is a museum in Sao Roque. A bowling ally, bars, restaurants, the old monastry has an ancient wishing tree that you can visit. In Madalena there are wine tasting tours, a volcanic lava tube experience. Many hikes and walks and of course you can climb Pico Mountain (2531 metres).

I speak fluent English, Spanish and Portuguese so language exchange wouldn't be a problem. I can teach you many things about Azorean culture, cuisine and language.

There is a secret cave I could take you to. Local swimming spots are plentiful and very beautiful.

We have many festas here which celebrate local saints, this is an opportunity to meet the locals, eat local fish, food and wine, dance in the style of the local chamarita. There are boat/sailing races that you can watch.

    You could go fishing.

You could learn how to mosiac, gardening using traditional Portuguese methods, basic carpentry and I am also a massage therapist.

I have an off grid open plan Quinta (wooden cabin) surrounded in nature, flora and natural forest on the foothills of Pico. You can see Sao Jorge Island easily. It is a very special peaceful place that is surrounded by nature, with ponds and vegetation. I am looking for open minded positive people who can work independently, who love and respect nature. I need help in the over grown garden, weeding and clearing. Cleaning and clearing my recycled wooden Quinta, building and general maintenance, recycling, refurbishing, art projects, tiling, mosaics.

There was a big storm before Christmas and there are trees that fell onto the land. I would love some help cutting and removing these. So if you have some experience with a chain saw this would be awesome.

All of the Quinta is made from found and recycled materials, it's important that I preserve this and continue to avoid buying things that can be reused. I'd like some helping hands fixing and mending things as well as help with a leaky roof together with making furniture from recycled wood, painting and restoring.

There is also opportunities for creative people to work on a wall mosaic, painting murals and generally being creative.

I have two cats and they both have kittens, it would be expected that volunteers feed the cats when they are present at the Quinta.

I will spend two hours a day with you, helping and instructing you of my plans, after that you will be left alone. I live a few minutes away in my family house and I am easily contactable if there are any problems. Do this would be perfect if you are a couple or friends or you like solitude .

There is no electricity here, so lanterns and candlelight will be your comfort. You will be able to charge your phone at a local cafe or other shop. You will have complete access to the wooden cabin. There is currently 1 double bed in an open plan style area, I provide clean bedding, running water, gas stove for cooking, a log burner for heat. There is a table to eat at, a seating area with beautiful views over to the adjacent island of Sao Jorge. There is an outside kitchen and BBQ area. The toilet has a bucket flush (I use rainwater). The shower is housed outside in a private area and hot water for this can be heated on the outside stove. The shower would benefit from being refurbished. This is something I am planning to do soon. (see photos)

There is also an opportunity for camping, if there are volunteers already at the quinta, other volunteers can camp.

I do not provide food. Therefore the volunteer exchange is for accommodation only. (max 2 hours a day). You will need to provide the food yourself.

There is a bus right outside the quinta that will take you to Sao Roque, Madalena (capital) and in the opposite direction to Piedade. This costs a few euros. From Sao Roque you can get the ferry to Sao Jorge (45 mins). From Madalena you can get a ferry to Faial.

I expect 2/3 hours a day, 5 days a week. I am flexible with this.
