  • Beschreibung

I am a very smiley person who is curious about learning. I am good at making conversations and am constantly trying to make connections. People make me happy. I adore children and brighten up whenever I see kids who remind me how simple life is. I am spontaneous and love to try new things. I love spaces of learning where everyone can learn more about others’ cultures and daily lives.

I am also a tree hugger who is deeply driven by how we treat our nature. Any mountain or water body brings joy to my heart and body. I grew up in a family that has different farms in Colombia. Helping out in my dad’s bee farm, my aunt’s coffee farm, and my grandma’s cow and potato-growing farm influenced my way of seeing the environment and human’s impact on it. I am motivated by sustainability, conservation practices, and self sufficient farming. The combination of social impact and environmental efforts bring sense and brightness to my life.

    Mehr Infos zu meinen Sprachinteressen
Since I was little I have enjoyed learning about new languages. I grew up speaking Spanish at home, learned English at school, and some basic French too. I lived in Germany for a year where I quickly picked up on German. Whenever I travel to a new country I try to interact with locals specially children. I have found that a great way to do this is learning basic words to allow me to communicate as much as possible with locals. My experience tutoring in Spanish and English has contributed in my interest to teach these languages. I am also willing and looking forward to learn new languages.

  • Was könntest du arbeiten?

I have lots of experience working with kids of different ages. These have involved being with children inside and outside of the classroom. I worked as a teaching assistant for 3 years in UCLA Community School, a public school in Koreatown in Los Angeles. For the first year I was placed in a newcomers classroom helping immigrant Spanish-speaking students transition to the school. I then served for 2 yers in a 4th and 5th grade classroom helping out in the classroom socially, academically, and behaviorally.

I also volunteered for one year in Peace4Kids, a nonprofit in Watts that seeks to empower youth in foster care through community building. I volunteered in the non-profit's Saturday programs with different age groups. Children's age ranged from 4 to 18 years old. Here, I lead a research project to redesign an existing storage unit into a heart-centered environment that allows youth to effectively engage in holistic healing and learning. The project required skills including space design, construction, and arts and crafts.

My job as a Resident Assistant in the UCLA dormitories for three years provided me with experience in conflict resolution, crisis management, budget management and event planning. I organized weekly programs such as arts and crafts activities, cultural and social awareness events, and academic counseling for my residents with the purpose of community building. My other campus job as a New Student Advisor taught me academic and personal counseling skills by helping ease new students’ transition to university.

I also volunteered in efforts to help with food insecurity and food waste. These are topics that I deeply care about. I helped with food distribution and preparation with Feed the Streets LA where we went to Skid Row to provide meals for the unhoused. In Swipe Out Hunger, I helped with food drives to avoid waste from dining hall food. I picked up and served food that would otherwise be going to waste. We also did drives to get people to donate meals and food products for food insecure students.

As the volunteer coordinator for Techo, an organization that seeks to eradicate poverty in Colombia through housing and education programs, I learned great organization and discipline. With our end goal of constructing houses in low-income neighborhoods I gained experience in fundraising and team work in the extensive process of building houses from scratch.

Another passion of mine is environmental efforts as a result of my experience in a family that has different types of farms. I grew up helping my dad grow different plants and crops. I also help with taking care of his 200 chickens. I learned about beekeeping and assisted my dad monitoring the bee hives. At my aunt's farm I have experience collecting and sorting coffee. I worked in her farm for a whole summer as a coffee collector. At my grandma's farm I learned to be resourceful and willing to help with any tasks. Some days I helped with the cows wither milking them or moving them to different patches of land. I worked on pulling undesirable weeds and in garden maintenance. With the lack of appropriate tools at times I adapted to do the tasks my family asked with what we had in hand.

In terms of languages, I can fluently speak Spanish and English. I can also speak conversational German. I love learning languages and have experience tutoring math in all of them. In general, I am a quick learner for new words and languages. In general, I am a quick learner an keen on learning new things.
