Hello! We are Astrid & Rylan, which could be confusing since our profile names do NOT align with that. We are both trans individuals and neither of us use our birth (otherwise known as dead) names. Unfortunately our I.D.s and travel documents still reflect our legal names and we are having to include that sensitive information on our profile. We ask that any hosts that engage with us are conscious of this and are respectful of our names, pronouns, and identities. We are more than happy to answer any questions that hosts may have in regard to our experience as young trans individuals, as long as those questions arise from a place of respectful curiosity, and not hateful ignorance (we can tell which way it is usually). We have each written our own bios below!
Astrid-Hello! My name is Astrid (they/he), I am a queer, polyamorous hairstylist living in Southwest Virginia. We have spent the last 6 months with three different Workaway hosts in Alaska and have absolutely fallen in love with the Workaway lifestyle. Being able to contribute to various sustainability projects and personal homesteads has started us on a path of creating valuable skills and memories. I am excited to continue to use this platform to grow my skills and connect with more people. I am an aspiring photographer, artist, and general jack of all trades. I love learning new skills and being challenged by the people around me. My goals include embracing a full time nomadic lifestyle and growing as a valuable community member wherever I am. I have a variety of skills and experience with customer service, cosmetology, and industrial work, and more hobbyist skills in graphic design, animal and plant care, and whatever creative project I can get my hands on.
Rylan- Hey there, my name is Rylan and I use He/Him pronouns. I have just started my journey towards travel work and I'm ready for more! I have loved working for Alaskan farms this summer and I'm excited to see where the next step takes me. I am the proud parent of two lovely cats, Bertie and Brutus, along with a collection of spiders, millipedes, a prospective aquarium, and a plethora of plants. With a background in animal care ranging from household pets to livestock I'm no stranger to working outdoors and manual labor. I'm eager to grow my collection of skills and hope to one day travel and work in sustainable communities with the hopes of building a better tomorrow. In my free time I love to cook and have been working towards honing my crochet skills to open my own traveling crafting shop. With an open mind and a big heart I cannot wait to experience what life has to offer and be given the chance to grow in as many ways possible.Interessengebiete

Astrid-
I am a licensed cosmetologist. I have 10 years of customer service experience and 8 years of management experience within that industry. This has enabled me to develop a plethora of interpersonal skills, as well as multitasking, task management, research, and accountability. I also have 3 years of experience in the manufacturing industry and a special interest/talent for visual/graphic design. I have worked my whole life and am not a stranger to challenging work. I am a quick learning, self-starter and I am excited to learn new skills and identify new passions.
Rylan-
I have plenty of experience in animal care. I grew up riding horses, showing in Hunter Jumper events and spent my free time working at the stables. I assisted in training new horses, developing their skills in the show ring and rehabilitated rescued horses. I volunteered my time at a local goat and cow dairy alongside a fantastic pack of Great Pyrenees livestock guardians, then returned home to my prized mixed flock of heritage breed hens. I worked with a local farm project to restore commercial land into usable farm land for community gardens and composting services. I moved on to veterinary care with an internship in Huntington, WV at an animal clinic where I got to work with a range of livestock from cattle to horses, standard house pets, and even alpaca. I then worked as a veterinary assistant in the city's combination shelter and clinic, caring for patients of all shapes and sizes in the wellness, shelter, and hospital departments around the clock. I currently work in human healthcare at a level one trauma center laboratory. I process over a thousand patient samples daily with a level head and keen eye for detail.Alter

Rylan-I have always had a knack for learning and creating, if I can get my hands on it I want to know about it. I’ve always had a special place for music in my heart, let it be jamming to my favorite artists or picking up new instruments like the piano and viola. I’ve played the Cello classically since I was 11, performing with multiple orchestras over the course of my life. Plus, who doesn’t have the rock star dream with a goal in exploring the bass guitar and drums. If it’s not music, it’s any crafty hobby I can get my hands on. I’ve made my fair share of cross-stitched artwork, often putting years into a single piece. This moved me to try my hand at embroidery and darning my own clothes. My favorite craft so far has been crocheting little gifts and stuffies for my friends. I've participated in some recent vulture culture, collecting bones on my hiking excursions and breathing new life into them. Animal husbandry has been a keen interest in my life as well, let it be working with livestock and horses to the common and exotic pet, my house is full of a diverse set of terrariums and aquariums focused on the complete comfort and care of my animals. If it’s not inside, it’s a flock of happy little hens poking about the gardens or a spoiled set of indoor cats. Last but not least, the biggest light of my life has been ornithology. You cannot take me outside without a pause in the trip for a quick peak in my binoculars or an excited spout about local bird calls and behaviors. I helped gather research for my professors and continue to go on a yearly trip to document the great waterfowl migration on the east coast of the united states, documenting over 103 different species and ready to break next years record.
Astrid-I have a deep passion for visually creative projects. I adore doing anything that allows me to play with color, graphics, design, or recycled resources. I have not had the chance to travel yet in my lifetime. I have not even had the opportunity to make it out of Virginia for more than a few days in my entire life, but I have always known that traveling would be one of the best things I could do for myself. I am always seeking new knowledge, learning is my favorite thing to do in the whole world. I am happiest when I am knee deep in something that I have never done before and I'm figuring it out! I love to collaborate with people and get perspectives that I could never have thought about and I love the way those perspectives shape me into a different, better person every time I explore them. I love so many different things, and have so little experience with most of them. My focus and most practiced skill has always been survival. I've lived on my own since I was 18, although as the oldest child of a large, broken many times over family, it feels like I have been on my own for much longer than that. I have spent my early 20s working and learning and growing and surviving, and I've done a damn good job. I worked 80 hour weeks to put myself through cosmetology school, and have dug myself out of situations that most people could not imagine if they tried. If there's anything I can do, it's whatever I put my mind to.Etwas mehr Information
