I am a recent graduate looking to travel the world! Through my school, I've been able to take short trips to England, France, and Romania, and I also spent a semester studying abroad in Scotland. I've been wanting to get back to traveling ever since I left! I am open to going anywhere and doing just about anything.

A large part of my interest in traveling stems from my interest in language. I enjoy studying linguistics and language change and I am eager to learn how to speak another language. I would love to share my knowledge of English with anyone who wants to learn!

Was könntest du arbeiten?
Service: I worked in customer service and retail for two years, so I am experienced in interacting with people and trouble shooting in these situations. These jobs also prepared me for possible behind the scenes work at hostels such as keeping organized documents and answering phones.

Content Development: I wrote and edited my college newspaper for four years. In this role, I also created the layout of the paper using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop and created a news website on WordPress. I would be happy to use these skills to assist an NGO or hostel in advertising.

Tutoring: I have been tutoring since high school. During my years in college I held campus jobs as a note taker for students with disabilities and as a consultant at the writing center. Since graduating, I have continued to work as a tutor for a company that has matched me with ESL students looking for help with anything from daily conversation skills to English proficiency test prep, and other students looking for help with middle school, high school, and college English courses. All in all, I have 8+ years of experience teaching varying levels of English grammar and have also worked with students on higher order concerns such as writing style, so I would be happy to work with beginner or advanced English-learners.

Teaching: In college, I took linguistics courses that helped me understand the difficulties of learning a second language and a course focused on how to teach reading. After graduating, I got certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language through myTEFL, which trained me in teaching strategies and curriculum planning methods. I also held an internship for which I created online learning content for middle and high school students by researching writing and rhetoric topics and then creating lesson plans that included activities, questions, and real-world examples for students to consider as a supplement to a video that I had created about the topic. As a tutor, many times I am more of a "teacher," as I create my own lesson plans for my ESL students.

Childcare: I have had experiences working with children as a babysitter and through volunteer work. During my university years, I worked with a local elementary school to provide after school activities for children with working parents.

Arts: I took dance lessons from the ages of 2-18 and continued dancing throughout college. I also have some knowledge of music from my family traditions and from my experience as an alto saxophone player throughout my years in grade school and college. In my free time, I love experimenting with ways to be creative such as painting and drawing.

Animal care: I have experience taking care of birds, dogs, cats, bunnies, hamsters, and fish. I would LOVE to learn how to help with any other kind of pet or farm animal!

Vom Workawayer (Marissa) für Host (Help us with a social history ...)

First off, I need to apologize to Michael for taking so long to write a review! It’s been a month since I left, but spending that month traveling, seeing other cities, and hearing other travelers’ workaway stories gave me an even greater appreciation for Bad Langensalza—I really have never been anywhere like it!

Accommodations
For the first few… read more nights, I stayed in “Gallery 3” (a room with museum panels that has a surprisingly comfortable cushioned bench next to a window with a beautiful view of a nearby church). I spent the rest of my four weeks here in one of the two guest rooms of the house. I adored this room and wish I was still in it! It was fully equipped with a heater, a desk, shelves/organizers, a mirror, and a bed under a beautiful slanted ceiling sky light.

Oftentimes Michael would pick up some delicious rolls for breakfast. There is also a ton of tea and coffee for you to use. For lunch, someone would cook a group meal and we would all take a break from work to eat and clean up together. Sometimes, Michael would even get us all take-out for lunch. Typically, Jörg would make everyone in the house a homemade meal for dinner. He is an amazing chef and the care he puts into the preparation and presentation of every meal made this place feel even more like home. For special celebrations, Michael and Jörg even took us out for dinner.

Work
When I first got here, I did some research on American women in the Third Reich, but focused on editing translations for the archives. After that, I mainly worked with Larry on the refugee house. Once the house was ready I did PR work and helped lead two of the weekly English conversation groups. I honestly loved the variety of the work that we did and I learned a lot about history and about behind the scenes work for non-profits.

Cultural Exchange
I could write forever about how great this experience was in terms of cultural exchange! Even just staying in the Haus is interesting because there are tons of museum panels for you to learn from. When I first arrived, Michael picked me up from the train station and explained the history of the town to me as we walked back to the house—he even showed me several of the sites again the next day as we walked around the town and had conversations with many of his friends. Michael makes sure that his projects involve a ton of people from both this town and elsewhere, which means you will get to meet so many amazing people during your stay here. They were all so kind to me—with Marianna showing Larry and me the Wildcat Village and Horst setting up a walking tour of Bad Langensalza for us.

Michael is like a walking history book, so getting to go on little adventures with him was always extremely enriching. My first weekend there he took me on a bike ride through the Hainich and made time for us to stop at the open-air museum near the geographical center of Germany. We did many activities throughout my time there, some with the other workaway, some with the refugee family, and others just the two of us. We went to a concert, the thermal baths, the Japanese Garden, and the Stadtmuseum (which he went out of his way to make sure I got to do because I expressed my interest in it :) ). Michael also made sure my alone time was very enriching by recommending different cities to visit and things to do in those cities.

I really appreciated how much care Michael and everyone else I met here took to make sure my time here was so much more than a work exchange. Overall, I had a really wonderful experience and deeply miss all of the beautiful people I got to make connections with!
