Hi, we’re Karen and Kev from Scotland. In September 2017 we sold our house, left our jobs and flew to Asia on a one-way ticket. We’ve been travelling since then; our first 19 months were in Asia then we went to South America for 7 months. We returned to Asia early November 2019 until May 2020.

We joined Workaway when we were in South America and did 5 placements there in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Mostly we were gardening and doing light maintenance, painting, etc but our favourite was working on a small farm in Colombia where we were milking cows, looking after sheep and chickens, cutting down trees and putting up fences! We enjoy physical, outdoor work – farming, gardening, etc.

When we’re in Scotland we spend a lot of our time hill-walking, running, cycling, kayaking, camping, etc; and at home we love gardening and growing our own food. We’ve grown various vegetables and fruit and kept chickens; and when we go back to Scotland we will set up a small ecofarm to be self-sufficient.

Kev is great at constructing vegetable beds, putting up fencing. cutting down trees and generally fixing things; he has also worked with horses and at a Safari park in Scotland. Karen loves gardening and also painting/decorating, etc; and has some experience with communications and marketing. We’re both happy digging, planting and harvesting, and looking after animals.

We both worked in business previously: Kev as a Safety Consultant working with farmers; and Karen in Human Resources / Training and also as a fitness instructor.

Back in Scotland we've created gardens, built vegetable plots, erected sheds and greenhouses and we’ve planted, grown and harvested various vegetables and fruit. We've also made jams, chutneys and juices with our fruit and cooked our vegetables in a variety of tasty dishes (we like cooking!). We've also decorated our houses, painting, laying new flooring.

Vom Workawayer (Karen & Kevin) für Host für (A beautiful quiet eco-lodge ...)

We were excited to find this for our first Workaway experience, and to read the previous review.
One of the reasons for choosing this Workaway was because the profile states that English is spoken, because we cannot speak Spanish.

However, communication from the host was practically non-existent throughout our 3 week stay as she was rarely at… read more the property AND she is the only person who speaks English. If there were not other Workawayers there who spoke Spanish and English we would not have been able to stay.

So, to start with, Nancy replied quickly to our enquiry to confirm that we could work at her property. After that, nothing - she didn't even reply to tell us where the property was. We found it by searching online and then messaging the previous Workawayers to confirm we had found the correct place. Neither did she tell us she wouldn't be at the property, so we arrived to be met by the gardener but we could not understand each other - luckily he phoned Nancy and she told him why we were there and organised a room for us.
On the positive side we had our own private room (not shared) - although the rooms are really cold.

Nancy did attend the property a few times during our stay but showed no interest in talking with us or even just asking how we were getting on. The one time she did talk to us for a few minutes - after we had been there 2 weeks - she asked when we started and also when we were leaving so she could make sure our room was booked out for us. BUT a few days later we were told by another Workawayer that a guest had booked our room - so obviously Nancy did not book the room out for us. We phoned Nancy to check this - she said she was busy working and would get back to us - but she didn't.
So we left the day the room was booked by the guest and when we told Nancy - via WhatsApp as we didn't know where she was, she didn't even acknowledge that we were leaving. No Good-bye, thank you, or anything!

Also, the gardener - who we were working with - left half-way through our stay but Nancy didn't tell us this - he went home one day and never came back - so we just got on with gardening ourselves with no direction (luckily we are keen gardeners and could figure out what needed to be done).

Also although the profile says vegetarian food at least half of our meals were chicken soup; and a lot of the food was not very good - our last breakfast was dry bread and rhubarb!

Unfortunately a very disappointing and frustrating experience for our first Workaway.
