We are a cooperative, ecological, small-scale farm (we'd say "organic" but we're not certified as such). We're located on Île-Bizard (which roughly translates as weird island), a 45 minutes drive from Downtown Montreal and accesible through public transit. We work as a team to grow vegetables and feed the local community through weekly CSA baskets. Our specialities are root and leaf vegetables. We practice an agriculture that's intensive yet healty for the soil, and we aim to minimize our need for water and other intrants.
2017 is our second year farming, and we're loving it so far! However, it is a lot of work and helping hands are welcome. Workawayers also helps us feel like travelling while staying in one place :)
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who'd like to stay somewhere close to nature and learn a lot about market gardening while exploring Montreal and Île-Bizard.
GREAT OPPORTUNITY ALERT !!!
If you speak french, you might want to apply for our internship program! It involves roughly the same amount of work on the farm, and as a bonus you get a theoretical, structured training. You have to be available during 21 weeks.

We all speak english and french and most of us speak spanish as well. The island is one of the last farmlands in «Montreal» and is home to a rich biodiversity. We have experience in urban agriculture, market farming and permaculture practices, and are more than willing to share their knowledge and skills. Our areas of work are really diverse. Together, we combine activism, social work, video games development, set and costume design, speech therapy and one of us is an awesome plant lover like you'll rarely meet. We organize horizontally and are in a continuous learning process to achieve better collective decision making. Each of us would happily introduce you to Montreal's flamboyant cultural world as well.
We're asking for 21 hours of help per week, usually spread on three days. In term of work description, what we're asking of you is an extra pair of hands to grow (mostly) leaf and root vegetables and all the work that entails, according to your capabilities. From bed-making, seeding and transplanting, to glorious harvest and preparing baskets for deliveries :)
In addition to activities at the farm, we might also need help with some small building projects (outhouse, shower...).
We'll only be considering stays of one month or longer. If you can't provide that many hours of work per week, or stay for that long, we are open volunteering on a daily basis if you'd still like to come visit. We all travel from Montreal to the farm and back quite often, making this easy to arrange.

You're welcome to camp directly at the farm. We can provide space in a tent, and bedding.
Food-wise, we'll provide you with one delicious CSA basket every week, as well as a few other essentials. You will have to prepare your own meals often, and you'll be able to do so on the spot. We expect to eat together quite often.
We will also provide a bike for you to travel easily on and out of the island. We make no promises, but there should be plenty of opportunities to get rides for faster travel.
Throughout the past season, we already had wonderful experiences with volunteers. Those who were involved on a regular basis were fast considered as part of the team.
We have very different work schedules, including at the farm. You should expect to spend some time on your own. That said, we enjoy spending time together even outside of work.
Scenery-wise, there's a gorgeous preserved forest area, Parc Nature du Bois-de-l'Île-Bizard, in the heart of the island. Most montrealers don't even know about it and miss out a lot. (Well, it's actually going to be partly closed to the public during the summer, which is a shame, but still there's a lot to explore.)
