We are a Dutch couple and since 4 years we live in the inlands of the southern part of the Alentejo, Portugal.
In the little village Vale Touriz, we have 2 ha (5 acres) of land with a house, a ruin, an orchard and lots of trees. Marieke works from home for an international company 4 days a week and Rob is an artist making glass engravings and takes care of the land and the house.
Together with our 2 dogs and 2 cats we enjoy the Portuguese way of living: tranqüilo, a vida viver em um dia!
Because we live in the inlands of the Alentejo, but only 30 minutes from the coast, you will experience the easy and quiet way of living from the people in the Alentejo. Portuguese people are very open and helpful.
Depending on the work you will do, you can broaden your skills or learn new skills of which you did not know you had in you.
We love to meet people from all over the world. Have good meals together with talks and laughter. We like to learn from you and like to teach you something about living in the inlands of Portugal.
Rob needs a second pair of hands to help him with the maintenance of the house and the surroundings. The jobs vary from repairing the terrace, maintaining the orchard, cutting wood, mowing the grass, small building projects etc. When you are not afraid to get your hands dirty, we are the place to be!
Based on how long you would like to stay and what your skills are or what you would like to learn, we can decide together on the work to be done.
Depending on the weather you can spread the helping hours over the day during the week and enjoy the weekends off.

During winter time you will get your private room with bathroom in the house. Other times of the year you will stay in the completely renovated caravan. You can use all facilities available (kitchen or you join us for lunch/dinner, washing machine, internet, swimming pool).
Our place is situated in the inlands in a very small village, what the Portuguese call 'campo'. The nearest village for grocery shopping, enjoying a drink or meal in a café is 15 minutes by car. We have a second car which you can use.
A train station is only 10 minutes away. Train from Lisbon to Faro (or other way around) stops at this station.
Located only 30 minutes from the beautiful beaches on the south-west coast. The beaches are very popular for surfing. With a train station only 10 minutes by car you can travel within 2,5 hours to Lisbon or 1 hour to Faro in the Algarve. The bus stops twice a day which brings you to the coast and all the villages in between.
Barragem the Santa Clara is 20 minutes by car. One of the biggest lakes in Portugal, great for hiking, swimming or enjoying a traditional Portuguese lunch/dinner at the Santa Clara Country hotel.
The famous Rota Vicentina starts around the corner. Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails in south-west Portugal. Comprising the Historical Way, the Fishermen’s Trail, and several Circular Routes, totals 450 km to walk, between the city of Santiago do Cacém and the Cape St. Vincent, the south westernmost point in Europe.
If you are in need of shopping, going out or just want to be around a lot of people, the Algarve is less then an hour drive.
Or you can just hang-around, enjoying the silence, take a dive in the pool - open all year round , enjoying a good BBQ, go to the Festa in the village, attend cultural festivals etc.
