    Description

Our establishment was founded in 2012 and has since progressed from supporting a few children's shelters in Northern Thailand to running our own education program. By day we teach English classes at a local school and in the evenings we provide after school care at our education center, Baandin. When students come to Baandin they enjoy activities such as sustainable agriculture, drawing, cooking, sports, and music.

Five minutes from Baandin is Huaimasang, a small mountain school that serves approximately 280 children from the nearby Lahu village. Education in this school used to be very poor, thus students were unable to qualify to continue their studies in other areas of the country. To do our part in improving the conditions here, we provide daily English classes to all grade levels and have begun implementing Montessori principles in Kindergarten classes. This programming gives the children a better chance to continue their studies after graduating from Huaimasang.

All of the students we serve are Lahu, an ethnic minority group that has fled violence in Myanmar and resettled in Northern Thailand for a better life. Our students are an at-risk population who face many obstacles in their personal lives: unstable homes, family trauma, landlessness, drug and alcohol addiction, and low or irregular income are very common. The children here suffer from chronic "lack of warmth," a feeling that nobody cares about them, which puts them at a high risk for human trafficking.

Your part as a volunteer is to teach English, play games and bring light and love into this area. This is a full-time volunteer position: individual schedules vary, but you will be teaching at the school in the morning (no earlier than 9 AM) and teaching and playing with the kids at Baandin in the afternoon (no later than 6). We work Monday-Friday and you will work a maximum of 5 hours per day. We encourage you to contribute your unique skills by planning fun activities for the afternoon or providing lessons to Thai staff.

Our ideal volunteer is a confident English speaker with a passion for working with children. If you are energetic, compassionate, and fluent you will do very well here! Because our students need stability in their lives, our minimum requirement is a 4 week stay.

Please send us a message with a short introduction of yourself, how long you can volunteer (4 weeks minimum requirement), and your email address so we can send you the application form.

Thank you for making a difference in these children's lives with your time, compassion, and enthusiasm!

Needs: We are currently in need of volunteers with backgrounds in teaching, psychology/social work, and videography.

Duration: We have a 4 week minimum requirement. Please respect that the purpose of this requirement is to provide stability to the children we serve. Long term volunteers are welcome and very much appreciated. Our foundation will help you obtain a volunteer visa if you intend to stay 3 months or more.

Dress Code: Thailand is a conservative culture and school attire should be respectful. While teaching, volunteers are expected to wear clean clothing that covers both the shoulders and the knees. Please bring appropriate clothes with you for your term.

Food and Accommodations: Food and accommodation are provided. You will stay in the volunteer wing of the education center and be able to cook your own breakfast and dinner together with other volunteers (groceries will be provided to you free of charge). Lunch is provided by the school. You will have a true and authentic Thai experience and make a difference in children's lives.

Costs: As we are all volunteers who run and fund the project, you will have to cover the costs of transport to and from our village (our offices are based 2.5 hours away in Chiang Mai) and any additional expenses you incur. We are happy to provide you with food, accommodation, information, advice, and training when you arrive.

Excursions: In your spare time you can enjoy the rural mountain region full of waterfalls, coffee plantations, and beautiful scenery. You are also free to explore the city of Chiang Rai on the weekends.

Certification: We now offer a volunteering certificate to all volunteers. For volunteers who need proof of involvement for their university, we offer an additional certificate from Huaimasang school.
