I am British and left England in 1972. I built this house as of 1981. It contains a small guest house and a permanent art collection. It has been the location for movies such as the incredible hulk and music clips of snoop dogg, pharrell williams and black eyed peas. I live with my wife and daughter Lucy (20) and son Eric (18). we assist other community projects (we do not publicise). I am a retired film maker and BBC Television correspondent and a painter with works in collections world wide.

Previous visitors have learned Portuguese and got real insight into the hidden Brazil where much of the musical and sports talent is born. Some guests have stayed on teaching English. Many guests stay for much longer than originally planned. Several have opted to live permanently. One stayed for five years. married and has a growing son. Many stay in Rio teaching English and have even moved to Brazil though it should be noted that a tourist visa now LIMITS THE PASSPORT HOLDER TO 6 MONTHS MAXIMUM IN ANY 12 MONTH PERIOD, Holders of two separate nationality passports can often by-pass this limit. Right now Brazil is in an economic decline ... BUT ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, HARD FOREIGN CURRENCY GOES A LONG WAY.

The major part of the exterior walls are already covered with mosaic made from broken tiles. There is still plenty to be completed. Design ideas may be mine or yours. Tthis is probably good for art student on holiday or leaving, but not exclusively so. This could also be extended to a group of around 6 friends who could be given our dormitory with own bathroom. It is my family's house and also a cultural centre receiving some paying guests. We are situated in a small and wonderfully friendly favela overlooking guanabara bay and the sugar loaf. Volunteers will get a big breakfast served by us every morning and will have a kitchen in which they may cook other snacks or meals. There are also cheap bars in our street where a meal out can be had for around us$3-5. We are right next to Brazil's SWAT HQ, so this is a completely safe location. There is a van up and down our hill 6am to 11pm. For legal reasons only, we have to disallow the use of drugs inside the house. Smoking cigarettes is ok with the usual consideration for others.

We are open to the public. Over the years almost half a million visitors have passed through our doors

THIS IS A SMALL VERY FRIENDLY AND TOLERANT COMMUNITY and we are a very active part of it. We make 2 observations to help you fit in.
1st) Please avoid intimate relationships with our community boys and girls.
2nd) While there is total religious freedom in the community, female iconic muslim clothing (burka) is best avoided

NB. Like everywhere else we await a post Covid situation. As it happens, our community of roughly 8000 has registered very few Covid cases and no fatalities. Apologies for continually marking months as unavailable. We hope to re-open our doors and welcome you at any moment.

Our dormitory has 9 beds and its own bathroom. We can receive individuals or we can close the dorm for an exclusive group of around 6 friends. There is plenty of common space including the main salon with wi-fi or three verandas overlooking the bay. We expect visitors to keep the room and the guest kitchen fit for everyone's use. We provide laundered sheets and towels, and soap. Personal laundry is done at the local launderette next door (not ours). Volunteer space is limited over the new year celebrations or carnival when we are usually fully booked with paying guests
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MINIMUM STAY IS ONE MONTH. The periods of New Year and Carnival celebrations are more likely to be booked out by paying guests.
If at some time you have your own work here and do not wish to continue volunteering but wish to stay longer, we offer special monthly economic rates. This has occurred mostly with English Teachers and some musicians.

Rio is blessed with wonderful beaches and the atlantic forest. At nights there are many music venues downtown which is a just about walkable distance. Is also possible to make extended weekend trips to Ilha Grande or the historic town of Parati. Drinks at our bar are self service and you keep your own tab.
