    Description

The Farm is located on the side of Maxwell mountain, a 10 minute drive from the town of Ganges, on Salt Spring Island. It is close to some great hiking trails. We have nine acres of mixed forest and three seasonal creeks.

Our projects include permaculture gardening, beekeeping, natural building and timber framing, clearing and installing services, processing firewood, and milling lumber.

We offer a basic work-trade exchange:
25 hours per week of labour in return for:
-Accommodation on the property in a tent or trailer.
-Access to: water, electricity, wifi, an outdoor kitchen, and an outdoor hot water shower.

Individuals are responsible for cooking and cleaning up after their own meals. Staples—oils, grains, and spices—are provided. Homestead eggs and produce are available when available. Note: housekeeping and meetings are not included in the exchange hours.

Long-term accommodation can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

Learning opportunities are available for candidates interested in developing the following “homesteading” skills: permaculture and food production, excavator operation, milling lumber, natural building, carpentry and timber framing, plumbing and water systems.

We offer these opportunities in a number of formats, including apprentice and internship positions, labour-for-learning trades, and tuition-based tutorials and workshops. Apprentices will be paid wages commensurate with competence and productivity. Please contact us to learn more. We are especially committed to women's skill-building in the trades, and people of all genders are welcome to apply.

  • Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Travellers could learn various sustainable building and farming skills, and market artisan skills.

Salt Spring has a lot to offer culturally. There is a thriving art scene. There is a lot of live music, a strong dance scene, including a lot of contact improvisation, and a lot of yoga. There are also interesting public lecture series, a documentary film festival...not to mention great hiking, kayaking, some rock climbing spots....

At the moment I'm happy exploring the hiking trail network beside the homestead. I usually head to Dance Temple at least once a week, and enjoy attending evening performances at La Mateada.

We have two internet connections--each in a different section of the property. One is a satellite connection, which usually works well, but not always. The other is a cable connection, which, thankfully, is very reliable.

We have a large and very friendly dog named Qika. Other friendly and well-behaved dogs are also welcome. The acreage is not (yet) fenced, and dogs must stay on the property. There are farms with livestock in the area. We are located close to a network of trails which are great for dog walking.
