##Be mentally prepared for the weather, it is not like anywhere else! It changes all the time!

We have recently renovated and opened a 1950's style Eventhouse/Guesthouse in the small village of Miðvágur on the Faroe Islands. The ground floor consists of a small 'shop'/gallery, (former bakery, but it changes based on events) a café and a bar. On the second floor there is a kitchen, small library, garden room, conference room, living room and a dining room.
The top floors feature 7 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The whole house is decorated in true 1950s style!

The building was a total ruin in january 2014, and people said it was just waiting for the wrecking ball to tear it down; however, I always had a dream to renovate it and restore it to its former glory. Even the late king of Denmark visited the hotel in the 50's, so you can imagine how special this building is.
Today it stands fully renovated, and it was all completed on a low budget and relying on family and volunteer help. A lot of the furniture is imported from Denmark where they were bought at an auction from Amalienborg Castle, and the heaters are imported from Sweden to make sure they are in the 50's style - you can imagine how much we have gone through to get the perfect look. We care very greatly about this house and have worked hard day and night to get it just the way we want it, and now that we are done, we would love to take in volunteers to help us in the bar, café, guesthouse and the various events that we will be initiating.

The volunteer hours might vary, depending on the roles which need assistance, so it is quite important to be flexible on this. There are times when 5 hours a day is neccesary, and other days where it may be relevant to more in if you want to have other days off for exploring.

Hopefully, the house will be used for various events - for example faroese movies night, knitting clubs, christmas parties, yoga classes and so on. It is also possible for people to rent parts of the house if needed for special events.

The Faroe Islands consists of 18 beautiful small islands! Miðvágur is a small village on the Island of Vágar, the same island were the only airport on the Faroes is. The airport is a 10 min drive from our house, and the capital city is only 40 min away by car or bus.

There are two ways to travel to the Faroes. It is by plane with Atlantic Airways (tickets can be bought on atlantic.fo) and by ferry from Denmark or Iceland (tickets can be bought on smyrilline.com). The boat travel is 36 hours by ferry from Denmark and 18 hours from iceland.

The weather is continually changing here (it is not unusual to experience all 4 seasons in a day), so that part is not for everyone - it must be noted that summer here is beautiful and we still manage an average of around 18 degree celsius.

Wintertime is a bit rough since it is very dark and we have a lot of rain and some snow, but normally the snow doesn't last very long since the rain comes and just washes it away after a couple of days - this means that it is important to take advantage of the good weather days that we do have :)

I'm sorry if we don't answer right away or miss out on updating our calendar, but we allow for volunteers to extend their stay if wanted/needed, and this is something that they normally do, so there are occasions where we will miss opportunities for other volunteers.

We look forward to hearing from you, and are excited to meet those who get the opportunity to join us for a while :)

    Kind regards,

    Marit

Hopefully the benefits would be getting to know the people here and seeing the Faroe Islands :)

How much and what things people learn greatly depends on them - we love teaching and we love learning, so hopefully this would be a relationship that both parties benefit from. Workawayers here will definitely learn to clean and keep a house tidy, scandinavian style!

Due to the nature of our business, the tasks can vary greatly, depending on what is needed at any given time.

Some of the things which will most likely be needed are:

General cleaning and washing (floors, rooms, bar, kitchen etc)
Preparing for events and helping during events (setting up tables and chairs, serving food, washing dishes etc)
Helping with the bar and café (preparing breakfast, stacking bottles etc)
Picking up guest at the airport og driving guests somewhere.

There are various degrees of handyman tasks going on all the time, so you may be required to paint something or put up wallpaper or something.

if you have any special skills, then they could be relevant for us: for example you could have seminars at the hotel for local people on whatever you are trained in.

Design, art and marketing might also be relevant for us :)

In general, we are quite laid back and might not really have a daily schedule. We are more like a family.

Accommodation will be either a rented flat in a building, or it will be a privately rented house. Both will have 3 bedrooms and, 2 of them will be double (most likely separate beds) and the last will be single. This will be your main living house, although there may be occasions where you sleep/cook at the hotel. These things are subject to change, as these are rented accommodations.
At the Hotel there is a kitchen, bathroom, staff wardrobe with a common room and washing machine and dryer as well. These will be available to use as well.

In your time off you could visit other villages, travel to the capital, see several of the amazing sights we have on many islands. Transport is possible and we are happy to show you around! :) We also have a house on the Islands of Mykines, and it is possible to take a trip there, weather permitting.
