We are a small land share project attempting to live cooperatively and simply. We are influenced by the climate in which we live and Gitxsan culture which is still very much alive in this territory. We honour the incredible land that we live on, both spiritually and through our lifestyle. It is important to us to protect the water, animals, air, earth that sustain us. This is an astonishingly beautiful part of the world, with snow-capped mountains and powerful rivers, and we are active in supporting local efforts to put a stop to industry violating this land.

    Arbeit

For the 2024 season, we are seeking a few volunteers to assist with the final touches on our Earthship communal home and woodworking shop. We are looking for individuals who can dedicate three full days of work per week. In addition to the work, there is ample time for you to pursue your own projects and hobbies, as well as explore the surrounding area at your leisure. If gardening is something that interests you, there are tasks available in the garden as well. As part of our community, we take turns preparing daily shared meals. Volunteers are expected to cook or assist with cooking approximately two meals per week and help maintain the cleanliness of the communal kitchen, although you are always encouraged to do more if you wish.

    Unterkunft

We have a cozy small cabin and a couple of school bus options available, all equipped with wood heat for warmth. Living off-grid means utilizing composting toilets, and currently, we do not have running water on the build-site. Instead, we make use of our sauna and ponds for bathing purposes. Our food offerings try to consist of what is grown or foraged, supplemented by grocery shopping as needed. Additionally, we provide an outdoor kitchen and the chance to acquire new skills while immersing yourself in an earth-based living environment.

There are beautiful walking trails on and around the property; through forests, to rivers and waterfalls and canyon lookouts. The towns of Old and New Hazelton are not far from the property, accessible by walking or biking. On weekends there is a local farmers market in New town. There are music festivals in the area each summer, that most of the locals and visitors come out to! We like to arrange knowledge/activity shares for whoever is interested. We have a library of books on homesteading, eco-building, permaculture, community living, mother earth, etc. that volunteers are welcome to dig into while staying here. There is plenty of space for people to have solitude or hang out together!

It is a little complicated to travel up here, but, hey! that makes it all the more exciting once you're here. There is a Via Rail train station, unfortunately the Greyhound bus no longer operates in BC. For the adventurous, there are charter buses that run from Vancouver to Prince George and public transit buses that run from Prince George to Hazelton, but these buses do not operate everyday, so this journey would take a few days. You can fly into Smithers or Terrace airports and take a bus to Hazelton from there as well, or contact us ahead of time for pickup. If you let us know your travel dates we will keep our ears open for rides coming from wherever you're travelling from. Let us know which option interests you and we can send more details!

We have good internet connectivity and volunteers can use the common space in the community building to do their online work. If it is a scheduled work that requires certain times then we will need to talk about it so it doesn't interfere with the volunteer work and our life here. If your the type of person who spends a lot of time on your phone this likely isn't the place for you. We find it can distract us from engaging in genuine human interaction.
