    Beschreibung

I am John, Christian born again, married to Rosebella,we have two sons and a girlfriend's I live in Nyakweri Village in Mfangano Island Ward, mbita sub county , homabay county ,Kenya.

Me and my family own a big piece of land on Mfangano Island. We do organic farming to sustain ourselves, which means almost all the food we eat we grow ourselves. So the main area volunteers can contribute to is farming, building of a backpackers guest house through their innovative ideas that are rich for the Island. There are some good trees that are very indigenous and looks so cool to live by and But other than that we welcome volunteers to visit our community and give innovative ideas and bring their own knowledge, expertise and experience to uplift the community. For example previous volunteers have notices the lack of environmental awereness amongst the inhabitants of the Island. Plastic is being thrown on the ground and chemical soap is used to wash in the stream and the lake. This will harm the beautiful environment we live in. So if volunteers want they are welcome to come with solutions, for example making our own organic soap. Other than that there are many more areas in which volunteers can contribute. We are open to new ideas!

Another idea that previous volunteers have brought is the building of a guesthouse/backpacker on our land. So as from anytime we call for support in realizing the start of this project. Any help to start up is more than welcome!

We love to host both female and male at our home, and set the volunteer free to cook with us in our kitchen and really to teach cooking skills to interested party. We give room for visitation to other areas, see animals, caves with human remains, swim in the lake ,play games, and practice cultural dances, visit museum and possible attend community gatherings.

Mfangano Island is subjected to large water body and has some other Island that surrounds it,Since Fishing and Cultivation are the major activities in the Island, men and women were subjected to sexual practices that has resulted to HIV AIDS leaving more orphans and widows and vulnerable children in the community,

volunteers are not forced to work when they feel unwell, we are always sensitive to health issues for we luck proper health facility, therefore they can carry some medicine in case of any fever and some money for advanced medication.

Since Agriculture has been viewed as act that does not pay back,I find it that through teaching, exchange if skills and knowledge ,technology and networking is the key to fight food insecurity for sustainable food production and development.

Volunteers work will depend upon there choice ,if they choose to work in the organic farm, they will weed, plant seeds, prune plants, dig, help in fence repair.they can also help is construction of kitchen coop and goat and cows cage. They can start up environmental awareness projects. They can initiate project to help vulnerable children, orphans and widows in the community .some will educate the community on hygiene and sanitation, training women groups and see way of bringing community together through tournament and boat paddling competition.we together can organize Jesus film cinema as a means of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to people.

    Unterkunft

As host I have to provide accommodation anytime volunteer comes around.we accommodate volunteer in our house and expect to share the table with the rest of the family, they are free to choose to cook for themselves. no charges for accommodation but they can carry sleeping bags at there wish if they may not feel comfortable with what we have locally.

You can wash yourself either in the nearby stream or the lake. So far volunteers have really enjoyed that. It is prefered that you carry organic soap. Although the locals don't use it you can set the good example.

If you happen to have a solar panel carry to help the family in energy and lightening so that they don't in hail the dangerous smoke of paraffin that cause cancer, water filters are also necessary in the community for filtration to avoid stomach problems and typhoid, charger or a power bank please bring it since there is not a lot of electricity around. But don't worry if you don't have it because we will be able to charge it with our own solar panels or in the village.
