The description below is our overall vision. But..We are in a low-key, kickback mode at the moment due to some family emergencies and we are taking on a few people just to keep the projects going which for now is making construction blocks from recycled styrofoam to build houses for people and workinging on clearing and building on our farm. The info below is valid and forthcoming but just as an fyi on the short term this is what our volunteers are doing. Thanks for your interest.
Newsflash: We are looking for a manager trainee for long term help in our hostel. Come share the vision! Learn American Sign Language, Spanish, sustainable arts and sciences, boat building, and become a guide and mentor. Commitment will be 3 to 6 months per year and potential for profit sharing
We are a non-profit school specializing in off the grid community building in Costa Rica, boat building, Green manufacturing, alternative fuels and transportation and working with underemployed peoples. We use Educational Tourism as a vehicle to introduce sustainable principles into people's lives, inspire others to join us and one of our communities, create jobs and improve lives as we prepare for worldwide economic changes.
We have been doing this for a number of years in Florida, In Costa Rica, we are a start up, and you as a volunteer will be a part of making this happen. The description is the overall BIG vision of all the projects we are working on or have worked on. Depending on when you arrive you will be volunteering for anyone of these things based on our need and your skill level.
Presently, we are looking at several remote Rainforest farms to establish an extremely light ecological farm community, accessed by boat with renewable fuels. The boat and motors are being fitted in our Workshop and Hostel on the shores of the fishing town of Golfito, in the Southern Zone. Golfito is near some of the most pristine rainforests on earth and we plan to access them with our boats.
We are planning to work with the Deaf population soon in our boat building projects which will lead to Tour guide positions. Some of these projects will be sponsored by the Deaf community in the USA. Great place to learn American and Costa Rican Sign language, Spanish, English, Boat building, Artisanal fishing, Wood fired mud ovens, Farming, Woodwork and more.
Golfito is a super laid back place, fishing village and historically a Banana town of great renown but long gone. It occupies a thin strip of ground, a road at the foot of steep mountains and jungles. Near Golfo Dulce, incredibly deep waters full of fish, shoreline with Coconut Palms, Howler Monkeys, Great Amazon Red Parrots, Sloths, Frolicking Dolphins, Jaguars, Bear, Deer and the list goes on.
It's also hot and tropical and intense, it's the tropics man! But when it's time for a cold drink the local taverns are great, some with local peoples and local vibe and others with a mix of locals and expats from around the world.
Shuttle boats come in daily and can take you across the water for cheap to a dozen places and amazing beaches.
We live and work right at the Shop. Zero frills, but right on the water with Ocean breezes. Sometimes it's noisy, but there is always something going on, We work hard, we eat good and we like to party too. Come join the vision, you may not want to go home!
We work hard here, 4-5 hours a day. It can be very hot at times, this is the Southern Zone. Some of our job positions are inside, like Teaching and others outside with manual labor, please take that into consideration when applying.
Please read: No matter what position you apply for whether is be as an ESL teacher or a position with physical labor force please understand we all do regular work each day to include (but not limited to) painting, cleaning, gardening, building as well as normal maintenance like cooking and cleaning. I will repeat, this is a hot, tropical environment and you should be aware of that. If you come from cold climates, or you are not used to any sort of physical labor, this may be not the place for you. Don't let this discourage you from coming, we can work with you and find the right job for you and of course you can be stretched right?
Also: The description above is the big vision of Peace Trail International. We are a work in progress Since we survive by donations there may or may not be a project that you are interested in going at your time of arrival depending what we have in the budget, so again, unless you are open to taking care of business, whatever that business may be to further our overall vision of Peace Trail International, from cleaning to painting, in addition to whatever you have been invited to participate in then this might not be the place for you.
Otherwise, if you don't mind going on an adventure with us and are open to learning new things...then this IS the place for you.
Lastly, are are not vegetarians or vegans. If you have special dietary needs we do not accommodate you to the extent of making special meals. We always have beans and rice, potatoes, bread, some vegetables and fruits, hot cereal and you are welcome to partake in them and also you are welcome to buy any special foods you are accustomed to. We honor the commitments of Vegans but our diet and are budget is based on Omnivore diet.
Blessings on your journey.
