Come join our growing collective of volunteers by the sea, and experience sustainable island vegetable farming in the adorable South Funen Arcipelago. Denmark's Nature Fund has recently provided an entire seaside farmhouse in order to facilitate the ultimate physical framework for a thriving living community of volunteers. A community for the ones who will aid us in our quest for a strong and vital nature in the glorious wilderness of Denmark; a community consisting solely of helpful souls from around the world, eager to get to work and help us create much needed funds for nourishing the danish nature by joining our crew and get busy in a wide scale production of 15-35 strains of the highest quality organic vegetables.
The agriculture is centered around an old estate, an ancient insitution in this local area, on the island of Langeland. Denmark's Nature Fund is an independent NGO established in order to promote the protection and preservation of Danish nature, decades ago this estate was donated to our organization, for us to continue a long tradition of maintaining this delicate area, of green forests, blue waters, and wide open fields. In the middle of the scenic splendour the castle itself stands as something straight out of Scandinavian folklore. The spire of the historic castle has been towering since the time of fairy tales, and still hovers triumphantly over the fields, as we weed them in it's shadow.
The sole purpose of our agriculture is to serve as an economic dynamo for Denmark's Nature Fund; in the most sustainable way we can think of; by sound organic vegetable farming, we nourish the land, harvest it's generous gifts, and create a profit, which will then in turn be used exclusively to sustain the wholesome efforts of Denmark's Nature Fund. This is why we need your help; to make the harvest bountiful this year so that the meadowlands, hillsides, forests, coastal regions and other wild areas can prosper like never before, all over the danish countryside.
We're looking forward very much to greet you here at our community in the very suburbs of paradise, the room is ready for you here in between the ocean and the littel chubby hills, and the fields they ache to be worked by your hands. We need committed volunteers like never before, enthusiastic comrades for the community who can put in the hours, and are ready to maybe at times sweat a bit in the fields. So see you for long days of physically demanding labour, endless rows of leeks to be weeded, and perhaps also a fair share of reckless guitar-strumming, baby-goat petting, recreational woodwork, dehydrated summer hikes, dense bonfire-smoke and moonlit skinny-dipping in the long warm season to come ;)

Help with Eco project
You will learn the basics of organic agriculture on a serious level of production, skills that will thoroughly equip you for your own endevavours into the realm of organic vegetable-growing and farming in general, whether it will be on a commercial level, or just recreational self-sustainability. You will learn to thrive with the opportunities and limitations of living off of your own land, and eat with the seasons(trust me there are a thousand ways to cook roots and cabbages during winter season). As a part of Denmark's Nature Fund, a substantial part of our activities is to spread awareness and general education on the danish nature, which forms it's own branch of our ongoing activities, for the benefit of school- classes and visitors throughout the year. In this regard we offer rich opportunities to get a deeper understanding of the treasure trove that is the danish wilderness.
Most of all we would love you to experience the true value of meaningful field-labour, the kind with dirt under your nails, wind in your hair and a half-chewed carrot in your cheek is the true blessing, and that manual work under the open sky, is something that can connect people, and is to be shared and appreciated
The job consists of the rather basic, yet vital manual task, that constitutes the very spine of the cycle of organic vegetable farming. We really just need all the help we can get partaking in the planting, the nurturing, the weeding, harvesting and eventually the shameless eating of an abundant multitude of sweet and nutritious organic vegetables. The tasks are simple and beautiful, once performed under open danish skies, basic as they may seem the potential for developing these skills is boundless. Just put your mind into the task, your heart into your hands, your hands into the soil, the sunshine into your face, and you'd be surprised how deep you can get with weeding, and how tan ;)
Besides the vegetable production, where volunteers will mainly be kept active, Skovsgaard Estate is quite an insitution. and we have a whole lot of other activities going on on our 150 hectares of organic farmland, such as herds of cows, sheeps, horses and goats merrily grazing the fields, and an impressive production of ancient nordic grain types. As a volunteer you might also at times be expected to help out in other departments of the agriculture, so we hope you're up for catching the eventual runaway sheep :)

There is plenty of space to go around in the old house by the sea, and if you join us off-season you will likely be able to move into a fairly large room of your own, but in the busy season we will have to rely on double rooms. That is however no excuse to steer clear of the plentiful communal areas, where you would hopefully feel inclined to join in as well. From the living room you can open the glass doors to the garden, and then it's just a lazy 300 m stroll to the beach, for your after-work dive.
Prepare to live with the seasons, cause we're integrating the very diverse production on the farm into the consumption of the collective, so the volunteers will live partially on the local produce; expect meals consisting of seasonal vegetables from our own fields, baking bread baked on flour from our own grains, and though it is a priority for us to keep the kitchen predominantly vegetarian, occasionally a piece of meat from our own animals to go along as well.
First of all it's important to understand that what we're trying to do here is not about turning a fat profit for the sake of making money, we represent Danish Nature Fond, and thus try to create a revenue by making sustainable organic products, that can be channelled into protecting and strengthening danish natural areas. That's why we need all the help we can get in order to make this project succeed, that's why we need volunteers to come help us help nature.
We farm vegetable crops on 9 hectares, mostly older strains, and we supply our customers all year round, so the season stretches into the winter as well. We have two lines of production for vegetables, mechanical field scale and a smaller market garden for supplying our own organic cafe and farm shop, but also in order to create a basis for the volunteers to be self-sustainable with a wide array of vegetables, more varied than the ones in the larger field. We primarily establish our main crops with the use of machinery and sowing equipment that are tractor propelled. We also use self-propelled weeding machines and harvesters, but also hand harvest/weed many of our crops.
At the moment we're pretty much doing commercial organic farming 1.0, based on the sound basic conditions for danish organic agriculture, no artifical fertilizers, no pesticides, herbicides etc. You can check below for further details. The fields have been managed organically for decades. This is however, only the second season of growing vegetables, it is our clear ambition to incorporate sustainable production methods such as agro-forestry, green manure, crop rotation, holistic grazing mangement in the seasons to come, but so far we've had to focus on firmly establishing a stable production.
