On our 7th workaway experience as a host and we are loving it!

Hello everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read our page. We are a family of 5: My name is Alex (44), my wife is Vivian (33), and our kids are; Ariel (22), Sheyla (19), Evelyn (3), and Elena (8 months). We live in Riverside, California, which is in the Southern part of California. I am a full time Associate Professor at a local community college. My wife works part time at the same college. Our oldest daughter Ariel just graduated from university and is now working part-time as a substitute teacher. She plans to attend graduate school in the fall. Our 19 year old Sheyla is a full time college student and helps with the kids during her off hours. We also have two pets. One is a giant Doberman Pinscher named Clyde who loves everyone and thinks he's a puppy. If you do not like dogs, especially extremely large ones our home is not for you. Our other pet is a long haired alley cat named Penny who is the boss of the house.

We are avid backpack travelers and have been to nearly two dozen countries in Europe. I have experience teaching English in Xi'an China. Having traveled to so many countries and met so many wonderful people we have often talked about opening up our home to fellow travelers. We have a small 3 bedroom, 2 bath house and one of the rooms isn't being used because both of our small children sleep in the same room as us. We thought it would be nice to host like minded travelers.

We are open to all diets, though we do not eat meat very often. I would say we are mostly pescatarian and eat healthy by American standards.

We have very liberal political, social, and religious views. I'd call us humanistic, democratic socialists with progressive views that have a desire for world without borders, peace, and collaboration and acceptance among all people.

We try to be as active as possible and spend our weekends going to the beach, riding our bikes, visiting friends and family, working on projects around the house, or just staying in and relaxing. Since we have small children we don't stay out late or go to pubs and bars much. As well, I work Monday thru Thursday so during those days we stay home and just spend time getting things done around the house.

Since this is a household full of women, except myself of course, we would prefer a female traveler or a couple, but depending on the situation we will consider all who contact us. We can accommodate up to two people, possibly more depending on the situation. We are a non-smoking household and ask that you be a completely non-smoker as well. You are welcome to come and go as you please. Longer term guests will be given a key. We only ask that you tippy toe if you come home late since we have a small baby in the home.

Our house is noisy all day long for the most part. Our 3 year old likes to sing, scream, and chase Clyde around the house. Our 8 month old is starting to coo and babble, and she definitely cries a lot. If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay our home is definitely not that place, haha.

There isn't much to see or do in Riverside, California. We have a small downtown area with several restaurants, pubs, and bars, but it’s definitely not comparable to L.A. nightlife. One of the California Missions is in Riverside, but that’s about it. We live really close to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Anaheim, and Angels Stadium, but public transportation to those places is not great.

    We are:
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️1.0 hour from Huntington Beach, Big Bear Lake, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Angels Stadium, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Long Beach, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Irvine
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️1.5 hours from downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Venice, Hollywood, Universal Studios, etc.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️2.0 hours from San Diego, Mexico Border at Tijuana
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️3 hours from Las Vegas and the Arizona/California Border

VERY IMPORTANT: RIVERSIDE IS NOT CLOSE TO LOS ANGELES.

Public transportation getting in and out of our city is very basic. We have trains and buses that can get you to all of the above places, but they are a bit expensive and schedules are thin. Traffic is also a huge problem in Southern California. The times above are based on days with normal to minimal traffic. Sometimes it takes longer to get to places because of traffic and the lack of good public transportation. Nevertheless, with an adventurous spirit you can reach all of the above locations. If our schedule permits we may even be able to take you to a few of these places.

To help you plan your stay with us I have included our train schedules and costs of tickets below.

ln terms of actual help with major projects we don’t really have any. The three main things we are hoping to have help with are:

    1. Cleaning and tidying up the house on a daily basis.
    2. Help entertaining our daughters.
    3. Language acquisition and practice (French, Italian, German, Russian, and Arabic are our current/main interests, but we love learning all languages)

We are more interested in the cultural experience of workaway. The type of help we have listed is just our regular day-to-day household duties that are shared by all members of the family.

Other things we would love to learn are: new food recipes, yoga, healthy living, fitness, sustainable/renewable living, minimalism, eco friendly living, gardening, and anything else you can teach and/or offer us.

We have small bedroom and shared bath we can offer. We recently bought a daybed with a trundle so technically there are two beds in the room that no one is using. We have a washer, dryer, full kitchen, television, and internet that you are welcome to use as well.

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️We are in the process of remodeling a sun room. Once we are done it will have a sofa bed that workawayers can use as well. Other than that, we have a small yard if you just want to pitch a tent and rough it.
