Hello, my name is Theo and I have been a workawayer for about 2 and a half years travelling across Europe and being hosted by both individuals and businesses in the hospitality sector.
Workaway has been a great alternative for a living and taught me many things about people and myself too and also welcomed me in a the new world that is about to emerge, which world is more collective and is based on mutual exchange, a value that I now have in my new life after quitting my job three years ago (I was working for about 10 years in the banking sector in Athens and then one more year in Berlin before quitting and initiating my quest).
I have been back to my hometown Athens since October 2018 and trying to settle my life the way I've dreamed it.
Apart from studying again, (this time on a field I have a passion for i.e. spanish philology), I am also managing a Workaway project in a guesthouse in Athens, I am giving language classes (Castellano, Greek and maybe Portuguese in the near future), also making my own handmade and natural soaps and now I am about to renovate the rural house of my parents that are now too old to take care of. In the future I am thinking to use it either for short term rental or give the option to people to share it with me in an exchange basis which is always more joyful and meaningful than money exchange that I see myself using less and less in the future. My idea is to create a chain of acquaintances and people that I will consider as family no matter where they have come from to visit me.
This project right now is more about asking for help to do some repair jobs and gardening in the countryside house that has been left the last few years without maintenance, although I was trying to keep it in a good condition as much as possible. However nature has always been stronger than humans and has left its effect on the things around the house. The house itself is in good living conditions with no problems at all and provides pretty much all the amenities (we only miss a washing machine and there is no internet connection yet). However there is good mobile coverage and you can find cheap mobile packages for internet via using data)
In the near future, I guess this profile will either be enriched with more projects or I might create separate ones for new projects that might emerge.
The main objective of this project is to get some help from people in the house in exchange to free accommodation. It is a house of 40sm (two rooms in total) and there is a small garden (about 25sm) which I'd love to use to grow veggies. There are already some fruit trees (2 peach trees, 1 apricot tree, 1 big and old olive tree, 1 pomegranate tree) which products will be shared of course with the people that are going to stay here. The peach and apricot trees already bear some new fruit in process which always gives joy seeing it).
The house is located very close to the main square (less than 10' walking, although the way back is uphill), and the coast is 500m far from the house. It is common for people sometimes to try their luck in fishing and also the fields around are full of many edible greens that I'd be glad to show you how to pick and enjoy them. They are very nutritious and have been feeding the locals for thousands of years. The house due to its location on a hill provides panoramic view from the patio to some olive groves and the South Evoic gulf (Ehvoekos is the name of the gulf in greek transliteration).
In the house there is heating, although usually from April and on you will not need it as usually both the days and nights are warm enough. There is also an air-conditioning device that produces either cold or hot air and thus can be used on all seasons. There is a kitchen stove and a fridge and the warm water is provided by an electric water heater that needs only about 15-20' to heat up the water. There is also TV with the basic greek tv channels and also some international channels available. The bathroom is connected to the house but has an external separate door. It's next to the patio door, so you only need two steps to get out of the house and enter the bathroom.
The property has a big sliding door (part of the fence) that is used for parking cars and it can fit up to two cars.
In the neighborhood there are just a few houses that are mostly used for vacation and short term stays from the owners. Usually only one of them is here for longer stays. That means you should feel good by staying pretty much alone sometimes during the week days :) The place is very safe and you will have the company of the creatures that live with us wild in nature (owls, a few cats that like to visit the house and I feed when I am around, birds, frogs, lizards and rarely hedgehogs and foxes). If you are lucky you will have the luxury of listening to the nightingales at midnight or early hours. The neighborhood also has some stray dogs because the people here feed them often, however you should not be afraid of them as they are usually friendly although they might check your intentions sometimes (you just don't have to run in case you face them).
The house can fit up to 5 people due to the numerous beds we have placed in there. I am thinking of changing the decoration and the furniture in the future as the ones that are currently placed there are quite old-style from my parents (but perfectly functional). This project could be ideal to host couples or group of friends or even various individuals from all over the world.
Personally, I will not be able to be around the house all the time as I am staying in Athens most of the time, so that means that the job will be agreed of course by both sides but you will have to work independently sometimes, but whenever I find time I'd love to spend more days there and also help in the work. That means that sometimes you will be alone, but when I am there be aware that the house is small and there is no door between the rooms, so we will share the space.
Also, in my life I am intolerant with intolerance :) and no discrimination will be allowed. Feel free to be who you want to be while there and express freely. Honesty will be highly valued as well.
Help in the house
Travelers will have the opportunity to live in a house in the countryside and in a place that hides many small treasures and will give you a good insight how people used to live around the Mediterranean sea for many centuries.
You will have access to whatever is produced in the garden and of course use for free all the amenities of the house (water, electricity, kitchen, fridge). The kitchen is fully equipped. Also, whatever is stored in the house food wise can be used from the people.
I will be also glad to provide some of my own soaps to use for personal and/or home cleaning and also share the techniques for the ones that are interested in soap making.
I will be happy to share my knowledge in languages, cooking and on various topics. I love a good debate and chat about pretty much everything.
As for food, I am currently not able financially to cover completely the food of the travelers but I will always try to buy some basic ingredients like rice, pasta, veggies for the people to help them make their meals while I am not around and thus keep as much as possible of their savings. Whenever I am there, I will always cook for everyone and share the food with the people helping out. That's why the schedule will not be heavy at all and the maximum hours per day will be 3. and no more than 15 per week in total.
For the time being, the major help that is required is in regards to repair job and maintenance inside and outside the house. This could be, scraping the rust from the fence (railing) and paint them, the same for the shutters and the doors of the house, removing the weeds from the garden and the flower beds around the house, I am also a lot interested in finding a nice and creative way to make a mosaic-like cover in the existing cement path around the house and the patio (but i guess this will depend on the time and money I can give for that and also on finding the right people to help me do it). Additionally, the patio needs some cement injections due to the heavy rains of the last couple of years that resulted in some cracks and openings in the spots where there was an extension in the past.
Also, the interior could be painted as well, although it is in good condition. The exterior of the house we use to paint it white with lime which is an eco-friendly product and it does great the job repelling humidity, killing moss and mold and also cooling the house as it reflects the hot summer sun.
Whoever knows from tree treatment in a natural way and gardening that would be great to help in making veggie beds. The region also is full of good quality clay, and I'd personally love to work with people to create a traditional clay oven somewhere in the garden. The area also provides a good quantity of wood and branches that fall from the trees that could be collected to use for barbecue and maybe in the future there will be a wood stove for heating as it is cheaper than electricity.
I am also open to any ideas that people's creativity might bring, so feel free to offer your talents and ideas :) DIY is great!
In any case I will always be available when the people arrive to show them the house and around, help them reach the house, welcome them and make a plan for there days there.
Greek, English, Spanish, Portuguese
4 beds are available. 3 of them are single and 1 double bed. In one room there are 3 beds and a single bed at the room where the kitchen is. All linen can be provided and also washed and changed when I go to Athens and come back. (Remember that in the house there is no washing machine and clothes could only be washed by hand there). Cleaning products can be provided.
The place is called Dilesi (ancient Delion) and it is locally called as the "charming and idyllic Dilesi" because of its natural beauty. It was famous throughout history for a battle that took place in 424 BC (), in which the famous philosopher Socrates participated and also for a modern history conflict between some "partisans" and the newly found back then Greek state.
Its distance from Athens is 50km and it is connected frequently with buses (about every hour). By bus it is about 1hour and a half and by car 45'.
Chalkida is also another important city which is connected with train with Athens and Dilesi. Dilesi has its own train station (just a platform :P) but it is about 1h walking from the house. There is no bus service that connects the centre of the town with the station. By car, Chalkida is only a 15' drive away. Oropos is also nearby which is also famous for the ferry service to Eretria which was an important city-state in ancient times. From the square it might be possible to get a free ride with people that commute in the area.
Dilesi has all the amenities, two supermarkets, a few bakeries, coffee shops with good internet, restaurants, a pharmacy, vets, a clinic in a city nearby, a hospital in Chalkida. Keep in mind that there are two ATMs available but no bank branches.
Every Wednesday there is a local grocery and fish market taking place close to the town square. The products are as fresh as it can get, usually produced locally and cheaper than in the supermarkets.
