    Winiajai (Hello)!

We are a small and young Achuar community located o the shores of the Pastaza river within the Achuar territory of Ecuador.
The community was founded by 2 families and today we live with 8 families in total.
We are very welcoming of your guests, in fact we have a small house facing the river where we welcome tourists once in a while. So everyone is relatively acustomed to foreignders.

Different from other Achuar communities, we have a little waterfall and clen water source from where we get our clean water from, wash our clothes and have showers.

Most of the adults living here speak or understand good Spanish, but some of the kids don´t speak spanish that well yet, as we make a point in preserving our local language. Nevertheless we all wan to learn spanish an dEnglish the best we can, that´s why we need our help.

    Help

We need help to teach English to our children. We have a small school where one teacher is responsible for 16 students from 5 to 17 years old. The kids are very motivated to learn English, because they like to communicate with the foreignders who come through our communitary tourism project, moreover English is a mandatory subject in the curriculum of public ecuatorian schools.

You would have fredom to teach the way you find best suiting and work around 4 hours a day.

Your work would be very important for the following reasons:
    - Children need to learn English to help the torism project thrieve, for this is the way the Achuar are trying to defend their territory from mineral extraction companies.
    - Is important for the community to meet good people from the "outside world" so that a positive exchange can take place between cultures.
    - As there aren´t many teachers working in the school, children miss out on different teaching technics and often don´t get to learn to much meaningful content.
    - If you are willing, you can also help grown-ups to learn English as they also need it and are very interested.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

You will be staying in a beautiful house facing the Pastaza river and just a star case away from our little waterfall and public community shower.

This is a house built for receiving tourists, so it is equipped with 5 beds inside a closed house and 4 other beds inside a typical open (no walls) Achuar home just outside the closed one. You can choose where you would like to sleep.

The bathroom is also in front of the river, but just a 2 minutes walk away from the house.

If you like to cook for yourself we can add a typical Achuar fireplace where we cook all of your meals.

Everyday one family of the community would be responsible for giving you 3 delicious and organic meals in their house. The food is only taken from the community gardens or the forest and rivers. This means you will be having fish, chicken, monkey, wild birds, pecari and many others. If you are vegetarian there will still be food from the garden for you and people will gatther Palmitos, mushrooms and other goods from the forest to serve you. If you prefer you can also bring some food to add variety to your diet or cook ourself in your house if you like to cook your own food.

    What else ...

In your free time in the afternoon you can choose among many different activities. The community will be happy to invite you to go fishing, hunting, walking in the forest, swimming, going to the beach or the claylick, helping in the garden, sharing their tradition rituals or learning how to prepare their traditional foods, drink and handcrafts.

There are no roads around our community, the closest one would take a two week walk. That is why you have to come here by airplane. We have a landing strip for the small airplanes to land. The flight from Shell is just 40 minutes away. The costs of the flight are your responsibility however.

There is not many dangers around here, the community is safe, there is no teft and dangerous animals don´t come to near, because they are more afraid of us than we are of them.
Nevertheless it is important to come with a health insurance in case anything happens and we need to take you out in a airplane.

There is no internet here, we only have a radio through which you can communicate with other communities which have internet. The closest internet hotspot is one and a half hours canue away, and we could take you there ocasionally if someone is already going. But if you need to go you can pay for 3 gallons gasoline which cost 15 dollars and we will take you there.
