Puerto Viejo is a lazy small Caribbean surfer town featuring a good local reggae vibe attracting a lot of backpackers. The town is located right on the beach shores and next to the jungle, making it good for those who love wildlife and outdoor activities, such as surfing, biking around but always (and perhaps mostly) for those who like taking it easy, just laying on the beach reading a book or doing nothing. You do not see anyone stressing around in this town.
Our hostel is located right in the heart of downtown, only 100m from the beach and close to all amenities (the bank, supermarkets, shops, restaurants and bars etc.). The hostel opened in December 2014 and is more or less finished, but there are always something to improve.
A bit about ourselves: our names are Elias and Mari. Elias grew up in Puerto Viejo, loves to surf and always has some project going on. Mari is a Norwegian who found her way to Puerto Viejo in December 2015 and fell in love with the place and Costa Rica in general - and in Elias to be more precise. She used to suck at Spanish and surfing but is at least improving :)
We are easy-going people and we are not very fond of micro-management. It is therefore very important to us that you are accountable and motivated to do a good job. It might be a holiday for you but the hostel is our life. So if we have not been clear enough or you have any questions, ask. In addition, please respect the dates we agree on. If you are not completely sure about your leaving date, please state until when you will at least stay until, and we can talk later about extending your stay if you are interested. When everything goes smooth, everyone is happy :) We are all here to have a good time :)
Helping with Tourists
Whilst staying with us you will be sharing space with a lot of different people from all around the world. There is good opportunity to practice your Spanish and learn from other cultures.
You will learn about the workings of a hostel and hopefully make it a good place to stay at. You will learn how important working together as a team is to get the job done and everything flowing smoothly. You will interact with other small local businesses and will see a glimpse of how things are done here. Also, you will gain experience with dealing with guests all over the world
This host offers accommodation and payment.
We are looking for happy, friendly, creative, reliable and hard working Workaways to help with:
5. Handyperson / Janitor
Depending on what we have going on at the moment, we might need people for construction work/art/painting too.
We are looking for people with experience within hospitality and tourism for our reception. You would need to communicate in both Spanish and English in addition to being a friendly and open person. The task is mainly to check in and out guests, coordinate with the person in cleaning which beds needs to be changed etc. and help out guests with any questions they may have.
If you have cleaning experience or like cleaning, we are looking for you! It is very important for us that our guests finds our hostel clean and nice, and therefore very important for us that our Helpers in cleaning are thorough and wanting to do a good job. Can you imagine something worse than getting shown to a bed that is not made in a room that is dirty? The job itself is not difficult, it is just to ask yourself how you would like things to be if you were a guest.
We constantly need good material for our Facebook and Instagram account, so if you are a passionate photographer or know something about video editing you are what we are looking for. You would need to bring your own camera and computer.
If you have experience and can work for 3 months or more, we are looking for managers. You would need to be structured, communicate clearly and good at following up and at details. Your shift would be floating. The manager position will be compensated due to longer working hours and more responsibility.
5) Handyperson / Janitor
We are looking for motivated and pro-active Workaways who can help with completing small (or larger) DIY tasks around the hostel...from painting walls to fixing leaking taps and helping with general maintinence of the hostel...there's always something that needs fixing as you can imagine with a busy hostel. Experience with electrics or plumbing would be an advantage, but is not a necessity. Shifts would be floating 5 hours per day, 5 days a week with 2 days off.
The daily schedule is made up like this:
- Reception shifts: 07:00-12:00, 12:00-17:00, 17:00-22:00
- Cleaning shifts: 07:00-12:00, 12:00-17:00, 17:00-22:00
The work is 5 hours a day for 5 days, so you will during a week have 2 days off.
As you see, the main tasks at the hostel if (not surprisingly) reception and cleaning. The other tasks are more a (very) nice to have than a have to have. We will therefore always fill these up first so we will require our workers to be quite flexible with tasks, but we will of course as far as it is possible place you where your talents are best used.
For the helpers doing cleaning/reception, we normally make the schedule so that one either does the one or the other for the entire stay with some bar shifts in between. If you have a preference or would like to change, please let us know and we will try to accommodate.
Also, if you are more people travelling together, I will try as best as I can to have you working at the same time and have the same days off. Normally, this is not a problem but please note though that this is not always possible.
Our ideal person is one that puts some critical thinking into his/her work and takes ownership of it. If you are in reception, you would ensure that the money in the cashbox adds up with what you are supposed to have, that if a person does not seem to have checked out according to the spreadsheet, you investigate and if it is true you update it putting in a note saying the person needs to pay another day etc, etc. Also, you have control over which rooms have been cleaned and you have checked it has been done properly before giving the guest the room/bed. For cleaning, if you see a thing laying around for half a day, pick it up. If there is a stain on the wall, clean it up and you are not afraid of scrubbing. Think like a guest having high standards!
Spanish, English, French
We normally have between 8 to 12 helpers working at the hostel. The workawys share a dorm, with good space and a fridge. Keeping the room and fridge nice and clean is the responsibility of the workaways. Breakfast is included.
We like to make all our helpers feel welcome and like a family. It is up to the workaways though to take initiative and arrange for common activities, but we have for example been doing BBQ nights and movie nights (we have a projector, so if you have a computer with movies...).
We have a minimun stay of 4 weeks
We are looking for helpers who are 20+.
The best airport to fly to is SJO. To get to Puerto Viejo from San Jose, we recommend taking the bus from Antigua Parada de San Carlos. The name of the bus company is MEPE, and the bus is leaving there from: 6:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. We recommend arriving at the bus station at least 40 min before departure. They do get full!
