Hi, my name is Ray and I am managing a beautiful hydroponic farm with the owner here in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. I need some help making sure our dream stays alive while we transition to an organic operation, restart our aquaponics system, expand our farm and space to accommodate everyone, and get our Air B&B unit back on the rental market again.
We are set high on the slopes of Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is a super valuable hydroponis and soon to again be aquaponic farm/growing learning experience with a majestic SUNSET view of the Pacific Ocean. This is a small (3 greenhouses) but well-established farm in South Kona, focusing on tomatoes, cucumbers, greens and Kona coffee starts.
Located in South Kona at approx 1,600 ft, 20 mins south of Captain Cook, HI. ~45 mins south of Kona town and about an hour from Volcano National Park. This part of the Island is lush and mountainous terrain with plentiful rainfall and abundant seclusion. We are tucked up in a jungle like micro-climate in the usually dry area of South Kona. You get amazing coastal views and breathtaking sunsets that are hand painted by the heavens every night.
We are in an agricultural area of the island. It is a more relaxed and quiet setting. Definitely for those looking to get away from it all. You will be serenaded by the coqui frogs every night. The farm is laid on the slopes to fit the natural terrain. The owner Stan and his late wife Kitty have an amazing eye for preserving the natural beauty of the area yet getting functionality out of what they have cleared. Walking the grounds there is tropical fruit, flowers, and plants too numerous to mention. It is a tropical getaway.
We are expanding and looking for helpers to help make the dream of a sustainable way of life stay a reality. Things are a bit rustic at the moment as we transition but we provide everything you need for an amazing stay.

We are looking for couples, groups, or at least two people willing to share a living space. I will consider a single person with experience in either carpentry or farming and a strong independent work ethic and I have another single or couple already booked for that time. A valid drivers license is required by at least one of the staying helpers. At this time the owner has request no children or pets.
You do have to be a fast learner with an independent work ethic and the ability to perform a moderately physical job (carrying, bending, stooping, lifting, etc.) and carpentry skills are a plus as more cabins are planned to be constructed in the near future and work exchange could include building them as well as other general maintenance and landscaping of the property. Work away learning/duties also require set up, operation, and tear down of the market booth at the weekly Saturday farmers market in Keauhou.
We are looking for 25 hours of help each week from each person. Very little of the work is strenuous and or difficult. You may be required to lift moderately heavy things if you are capable and operate yard equipment if you are comfortable.
Saturdays are Farmers Market days and are mandatory for at least one worker for 3/4 of the Saturdays during your stay. For at least 5 hours during the market, we will need your help. You will be required to help transport goods to market which may require driving the van, set up, and take down the market booth. You get 2 full days off per week and we can negotiate them on a week to week basis!
The rest of the weeks hours can be filled in many ways.
General Farming Duties Include; Weeding, watering, planting, clearing, harvesting. I will educate the workers all along the way with everything I have learned growing plants of all kinds. This will be the majority of the help needed.
General Grounds Maintenance; Weedwhacking, mowing, clearing dead plants and trees, cleaning up the land and areas that have been unused for a time.
Preparing New Areas; Cleanup and building of new worker areas to expand our potential for more workers and their comfort while staying with us.
Farmers Market; Learn how to prepare, run, and be successful in a local market environment.
We are a one-month contract minimum and would prefer longer!
We will also honor longer contracts and have to bump workers with shorter contracts. We will also have to bump single helpers over a couple, or group that has the similar contract length. Apologies in advance but there is a higher learning curve and a lot to learn. We are dependant upon the produce we grow to sustain and do not wish to waste our time or yours. Usually, in one month, you are just beginning to get the hang of all the things we will have taught you and probably not even covered it all. We have a little something for everyone.
We are in the process of building worker spaces but just in the early stages. Right now all I can guarantee is camping style accommodations. They will be changing rapidly as funds and help comes in, so feel free to ask me what the current state of our accommodations are if the rest sounds intriguing to you.
We are just starting planning and fundraising for the building new worker spaces with a community kitchen. We are planning to use eco-friendly materials and build off-grid systems so that people can learn a sustainable way of living. If that sounds interesting to you and you would like to help us create please contact me right away.
Gotta be ok with our giant but super friendly pitbull running about as well. I do not live on this property, the owner Stan does. I am there almost every morning and evening with our dog and sometimes our 4 yr. old Harmony Grace who will insist you play with her.
We provide water and an amazing place to stay. We provide the staples of rice and beans plus what we grow on the farm. Tomatoes, cucumbers, greens. We also have separate areas where we are growing peppers, celery, onions, and kale as well as areas for the workers to plant their own gardens if they are staying longer. There is ample produce to buy at the Saturday market and I will take at least 1 Costco trip each month that you can either place an order or possibly come along. Workers are required to cook and clean up after themselves.
I can pick you up when you arrive and drop you off when you are ready to leave. We will provide transport to the market for at least one worker. All other transportation will need to be arranged by workers. If you plan to explore the whole island I can try to help find and arrange a rental vehicle to fit your needs.
The owner's wife recently passed away and we are in transition for me to take over full-time operation of the farm. Our plans may change as the situation dictates so I apologize if there is any confusion.
We do not provide full-time transportation. A rental car would be recommended if you plan to use your spare time to do some exploring. There is a vehicle available for emergencies only and then only to licensed and insured drivers.
