We are a small family owned farm in the Colorado four corners area of the Southwest. Using a collection of organic/sustainable growing principles, we cultivate produce for local farmers markets and restaurants. In addition, we are also slowly adding important farm infrastructure. Along with our chickens, we have cats, dogs and 2 young children.
Cooking / shopping
Volunteers will learn the basics of plant cultivation, large scale gardening and growing for farmers markets. Fundamentals in composting plant matter and manure will be practiced. If stores allow, we will harvest honey and comb from our bee colonies this fall. Volunteers will also be introduced to irrigation use and watering in a high, dry elevation.
A commitment of 20-25 hours/week would be contingent upon stay. Daily tasks would revolve around planting, maintaining and harvesting our market crops. Specifically, this would entail sowing seeds, thinning, weeding, mulching, digging, picking, washing, packaging, canning, farmers market and several other things I've likely forgotten. We would also like help building a barn and several other outbuildings on the property. Volunteers hours will likely be in the morning and late afternoon/evenings in attempt to avoid the midday heat.
The volunteer(s) will be staying in either of two stick built outbuildings. Volunteers will have a bed/futon for sleeping. Each building accommodates two and we encourage committed couples to inquire! One building has a two burner cook top, extra large toaster oven, refrigerator, crock pot, bread machine and hot water kettle. Limited access to internet will also be available. Use of the shower and laundry will be shared with our family. We will provide a regular and ample amount of staples (oatmeal, rice, beans, etc.) along with our wonderful homegrown produce and eggs. Several meals a week will be shared.
A wide variety of destinations are available within an hour driving distance from our farm. Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, Four Cornerns Monument, Cortez, Telluride and Durango are just a few. There is also mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, fishing and camping just minutes away.
Having transportation would be very helpful and beneficial for the volunteer. We live in a rural area where travel by auto is a must. Please contact us if you are without to discuss possible options. Bicycle is a plus.
We strive to live healthfully and mindfully. Our hope is that those interested in helping us will too. Farm work is labor intensive and dirty but richly rewarding. Be prepared to work hard, have fun and meet wonderful people.
