Hello all! I'm Sam (Rukundo Sam) and I am the pastor of a Pentecostal church in the gorilla highlands of Western Uganda. I founded the church under the name of Nyamaga Pentecostal Church Ministries and it is one of a handful of Pentecostal churches working together in our community to better the lives of disadvantaged people.
My family and I are a welcoming born again Christian bunch of six children and my loving wife who works in our local shop. Two of my children are tiny twins and the favourite among customers of my local restaurant in little Leweebos (chief chuckler).
Sunday is the day of greatest religious activity and I travel from church to church preaching the word of God. During the week I manage my families local restaurant, where as a volunteer you will stay in your own room and be catered for by my staff. I will endeavor to make every aspect of your stay with my family the happiest and most comfortable you would wish to experience anywhere.
Through our churches, other pastors and I are starting to help those in our community, in and around the town of Kisoro, who are living as orphans, widows, surviving on alms and those abandoned on the streets. We are looking to work closely with volunteers on designing programmes and activities, so that we can help the needy through and in our places of worship. Fostering a belief in God in those people who need his guidance most so that they can find the strength to strive for better lives.
Let's preach together, read the bible and discuss it's meaning, help each other in thinking of ways we can benefit the needy in our little town of Kisoro and it's environs. I very much look forward to accommodating volunteers so that we can work together and live together as friends and family. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

My home and church is located in Kisoro district in Western Uganda, which is known for the presence of gorillas in the area. It’s a beautiful hilly part of Uganda which is dominated by the Virunga volcanoes. By volunteering with our church, you’ll not only have a visually rich experience of natural beauty, but you’ll discover a culture quite unique in Uganda. The learning opportunities of working with those people who dearly need your help are the sorts of opportunities that mark your character with internal sign posts, that for a lifetime you remember how they changed your direction ever so slightly.
My family and I are happy to accommodate and work with anyone. If you have ideas that can help us to better organize and deliver solutions to those most in need, that's a fantastic bonus. Scheduling workshops in our church on themes of your choice, organizing activities for children or lessons if you have experience teaching and other ways of using our place of worship to better serve our congregation and newcomers.
We also visit a local prison where we evangelize to inmates and try to impart how God can mold their futures if only they accept his love. Using 'God' as a goal, a belief in something in which they might find purpose and shed the life of crime.
We can also organize guidance and counseling sessions if there are particular issues facing members of our community you think you can help with.

You will stay with my family and I, and be provided with everything sufficient for your comfort. You will have your own private room within my local restaurant that is my daily business and your own private bathroom. You will be a new member of our family as a volunteer and will be fed from my restaurant with three hearty meals per day, not including a good few cups of African tea and honey. Feeding is my business when not attending church or to church activities, and volunteers will almost certainly leave a little larger than when they arrived. In your room you will have a single bed with a mosquito net (unless a couple), a large desk and a reading stand, your own key and the freedom of my restaurant to ask for anything when needed.
Kisoro district is a wonderful place to experience the best of Uganda from gorilla trekking to canoeing on the lakes of Mutanda and Bunyonyi. There are numerous hiking packages in the area and you can easily organize to climb the mighty volcano of Muhabura through Uganda Wildlife Authority in town. There are endless activities to entertain yourself in your free time.
How to get to Kisoro?
If you are travelling from Kampala, there are many buses operated by different companies that travel directly to Kisoro. There is no need to change buses or use local taxis from Kampala to Kisoro, unless of course you have planned a detour. When in Kampala, I recommend visiting Kisenyi bus park the day before travelling to buy a ticket. Simply ask a boda-boda to take you to Kisenyi bus park and on arrival you can enter the offices of any of the companies travelling to Kisoro. A popular company is 'Bismarkan' inside whose office you can buy a ticket for the following morning. Make sure to tell the clerk that you are going to Kisoro directly and they will likely ask for SHS 30,000 (dependent on seasonality ranging from SHS 20,000 - 30,000).
When you arrive in Kisoro we can collect you from the bus park or you can take a boda-boda to 'Turimumwami restaurant' in Mutanda Road, at which point you have arrived and will be welcomed with open arms.
