    Description

Who We Are: We are a diverse inter-generational group of individuals building a non-profit human services co-op focused on wellness, home and food security. We see a great need for a restorative approach to almost everything we do, but most especially towards the land, we are taking care of.

Our team celebrates our differences and collectively have vast experience in many areas. We are excited to collaborate with other forward-thinking humans wanting to use their gifts to co-create revenues and resources for our families and communities🙂

We know that there are many solutions being developed around the world and we are grateful to the hard work and dedication of so many of our global citizens! We understand that the more effectively we work together and the healthier we each are, the more innovative we can be and the faster we can return things to a more balanced state.

There are many solutions still to find and an incredible amount of advocacy and education required but our team is committed to building better systems for stronger communities. Our current team have skills and knowledge across many areas including but not limited to:

    Ranching

    Animal Breeding

    Music production and promotion

    Event management

    Fundraising

    Co-op development

    Building digital tools

    Community development

    Activism and social justice

    Support work and caregiving

    Inclusion specialists and coaches

    Non-profit services

    Permaculture and plant-based medicine

    Agriculture and land restoration

    Organic and sustainable farming practices

    Carpentry

    Graphic arts

    Wildcrafting

and much more.. come share skills with us.

We recently purchased a rustic, ten-bedroom lodge with a commercial kitchen that will serve as our homestead and co-op headquarters. The lodge will serve many purposes including but not limited to the following:

    1) Farm to Table food production: We have a farm, a commercial kitchen and lots of space for gardens and we will be working with our local food producers to provide fresh local food to our residents and community members. Eventually, we would like to help facilitate deliveries to vulnerable members of our community such as our elders, new mothers and people challenged with injury, illness or diverse abilities.

We will also be working with community partners to host a wide variety of courses and workshops related to mindful food production, care of livestock, working with medicinal plants, nutrition, food preservation, sustainability and land restoration.

    2) Housing security: One of the goals of the co-op is to increase available housing and homesteading opportunities. Our goal is work cooperatively to increase both individual and shared revenues while reducing shared costs. We currently operate a nearby sheep farm and are looking to purchase more farmland in the very near future to build homesteads and a wide range of services that are needed within our community. Over this summer we are looking to build more cabins to be used for both short and long-term accommodation.

    3) Wellness: We believe in promoting balance and the restoration of health in both ourselves and nature. For this reason, individuals working as part of the project are welcomed to take on a mix of activities that support their optimal wellbeing. For example, if someone is a bookkeeper or chef, they would be welcomed to also spend time with the animals, in the gardens, or following their creative pursuits. The long-term goal of the co-op is to build an integrated trauma-informed wellness system that focuses on preventative medicine and wellbeing while increasing social supports and access to a wide range of health practitioners for resolving health concerns as they arise. Much like our agriculture program, our co-op development and marketing team want to support individuals and projects that promote wellbeing to move from inspiration to inception as well as working to improve access to these services for all community members. We aim to redefine human resources and build safe progressive work environments and lifestyles that honour people's strengths, promote health and creativity while allowing lifelong learning through tiered mentorship and strong team building.

Providing progressive Education and “work” environments

    Honouring neurodiversity

Supporting mindful innovation and projects that are human or planet centred.

Tiered mentor-ship, personal responsibility, lateral supports...do it or delegate it, providing Assistive technology and supports for individuals with weak executive functioning and helping each of us thrive.

We honour the fact that some of our most gifted individuals have highly sensitive nervous systems and need to tailor their work and learning environments to minimize distractions and promote creativity. Our goal is to help each of us figure out our individuals' needs and design schedules and environments that maximize our individual health and neurological wellbeing. By taking responsibility for our own wellbeing and prioritizing balance and holistic health we put on the proverbial “oxygen mask” giving us more energy and creativity to offer to each other and our passions.

Promoting a creative balanced way of life, outside the box solutions and social responsibility.

Special Events – With our collective experience in event planning and promotions, we are looking at hosting a wide range of special events including workshops, art, music and cultural celebrations, strategic planning, professional development, social justice, retreats etc. The possibilities are only limited by our imaginations.

Now that we’ve explained where we aim to go, let me quickly explain where we are starting and what our goals for spring 2019 entail. We purchased the lodge which is a rustic ten-bedroom lodge with 2 cabins and an old mobile home. The property has been under the same ownership for the last 25 years and is now in need of some TLC to help it reach its full potential. This spring and going forward, we will be:

Building Co-op structures, bi-laws, good neighbour agreements, articles of incorporation etc.

Renovating an older 2 bedroom mobile home to make it wheelchair accessible, practical, and beautiful for 2 of our communities elders so they can remain as independent as possible

Fundraising for the research and development of a mobile hospice space that would be used by our community members nearing the end of their lives and our agriculture elders that wish to remain in the country and in as independent a manner as possible. This would be a solution that could be replicated and could also be used for people recovering from an ability altering injury or illness.

Renovating what is currently an uninsulated and impractical hot tub house. We need to convert it into a lovely and peaceful multipurpose space that will be used as a treatment room for healing arts professionals in our community, a yoga/mind-body practice space, a chill-out zone for when anyone needs to decompress, a fun place for kids to tumble and dance or have a movie night.

Making many small repairs and upgrades to the existing space to not only beautify it but to improve their energy efficiency, versatility and functionality.

Spring garden planning, preparation and planting

Meal planning and preparation for residents and guests. Our goal is to provide fresh nutrient dense, sustainably produced food and value-added products

    Care of livestock

The farm site we run is just down the road and is also in need of spring clean-up, garden development and maintenance.

repairs and maintenance are needed for existing structures such as greenhouses, garden beds, outbuildings and fences, to building new cabins and new garden beds.

Clearing dead-fall off the land and building firewood reserves for next winter.

During this time period, we will also have to move our resident elders from the antler cabin to the trailer and then Renovate and insulate the Antler Cabin so it can be rented out over the high season.

Moving forward we will also be starting to host a variety of special events, dinners as well as providing courses and training opportunities such as food safety, first aid, bookkeeping etc.

We will continue to build infrastructure and services that are in line with our core values and that benefit our community at large. Ideas for events and workshops and any other wisdom or creative ideas are welcome and valued at any time. We are also open to building solid partnerships and supportive relationships with groups or individuals that are forward thinking, solution oriented and align with the values of our non-profit human services cooperative.

    What else ...

We are in the heart of the Slocan Valley at the foot of the Valhalla mountain range with easy access to hiking, biking, camping, paddling... The Lodge is a 10 min walk from the Slocan river and there is an old rail trail that runs for over 50 km connecting Crescent Valley to Slocan City. This area is an outdoor playground and there are numerous festivals and music events in our area. Our lodge is located one hour outside Nelson BC which is an eclectic mountain town with something for everyone. In addition there are also several natural hot springs that are only a short day trip from here. Slocan City (which is actually a small town) has a beautiful beachfront and there are daily volleyball games and a fun relaxed family vibe.
