Description
If you like nature and animals, being kind to creatures and having quiet time in a beautiful but rugged backdrop, you’ll like our place. We have 10 acres in slow transition to fertile sanctuary. We're half way there but would love some help to speed up the process. Happy chickens to feed. Horses to hang with. Gardens to tend. And little loving details that would love your special attention.
Note: we have a slow reply rate from the events that happened around 2020. We are just coming back to this platform now (in spring of 2023) to give it a try again. We also spend a lot of time outdoors and don't hang out around our computers for long periods. While we are working to improve our reply rate, please note that it reflects a life with priorities NOT RUN BY MACHINES and hustle culture. But once you're here in person, our attention span is much more present. If this makes sense to you, you're our kind of people.Types of help and learning opportunities

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
While on the farm, you can gain exposure to alternative horsemanship, ethical human-animal co-habitation, holistic land management and hosts with worldly backgrounds to help you interpret your Canadian experience. Shannon was also a University English teacher, so she's happy to help you sharpen your communication skills!
Help
Help with feeding and caring for horses, some chickens, gardens and general farm and property maintenance. Suitable candidates may also get access to ethical horsemanship education (but this shouldn't be expected). Applicants must care about animals and the subtle details of inter-species relationships.
This property is very much a work in progress. There is a lot of variety with the type of work you can participate in. Upcoming projects include garden maintenance, landscaping, fence staining, horse care, cabin upgrades, baby chick tending and ongoing enrichment improvements to animal housing.Languages spoken

We are in the process of renovating our main house and as such, we only have individual rooms with access to internet as well as toilet and shower. Kitchen activities will be outdoors (for guests) or in a covered area with a camping-style kitchen. The good news is, it's summer! And island weather is gorgeous, so outdoor patio hangs are frequent and desire to be inside is infrequent. We also have private accommodations in a clean but older 2-bedroom mobile home. If you prefer this dwelling, we'd love your help in sprucing it up a bit!
We can supply a combination of prepared meals and ingredients to make your own snacks. Espresso-type coffee or tea available for you to make yourself each morning. We use mostly whole food and healthy ingredients in our home and this is a gluten free (celiac) household. We are eaters of ethical meat and have lots of farm fresh eggs from very happy chickens. We can also provide vegetarian meals. What else ...
We live in an area that is a beautiful mix of rural Vancouver Island and convenient ammenities. While our neighbourhood is full of small-scale farms, there are town conveniences within a 10 minute drive. There are also lots of cycling paths, mountain biking trails, farmers markets, sandy ocean beaches, etc. nearby. The adorable village of Coombs is home to the famous "Goats on the Roof" Country Market and all kinds of other quirky shops. The 800-year old trees of old growth Cathedral Grove is 20 minutes away and the surf haven of Tofino is about 1.5 - 2 hours away. Farmers fields, ocean, forests and mountains—all are in a reasonable distance to our place!

The way Shannon and Dillon are with animals really amazed me. They share a deep connection and love. Therefore explaining about their behaviour comes naturally. I learned a lot about chickens and horses… read more
