    Description

This is a nonprofit intentional, life-sharing community with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a licensed facility in Virginia since 1971. we are a close-knit community devoted to developing profound relationships based on mutual needs, respect, and love. We share life on a 550-acre farm where together we work in our therapeutic workstations. Volunteers come from around the world to serve in our community as caregivers for a one-year period of service. Currently, our openings are for a one-year service commitment. We do not offer short-term possibilities at this time.

We have a vibrant community and our hope is to find individuals who have a passion for meaningful service with individuals with intellectual disabilities, working, learning, and sharing alongside one another. Each person in the community has an important role, something valuable to contribute, and the opportunity to learn and grow.

This is a unique opportunity if you are interested in rural community living and working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. We are looking for individuals who would like to serve as residential volunteer caregivers. Residents, volunteers, and staff work together on our farm, a model therapeutic environment emphasizing empowerment, interdependence, and mutual respect of all. Serving as houseparents, caregivers live together with residents in family-style homes. They are trained in house management as well as caring for the personal needs of each resident. Helpers are also engaged in therapeutic and meaningful help in our art studio, bakery, community kitchen, farm, herb and vegetable gardens, free school activities like pottery, the weavery, and the woodshop. Being an active and participating member of the community is highly encouraged and welcome.

Most importantly, our community's need is for a one-year commitment to volunteer service. Each volunteer receives 2 consecutive days off and some evenings free for personal time. Because we are a remote and rural community, there is no public transportation nearby. However, the use of village vehicles is possible once orientation is complete so volunteers can venture out to local areas such as our nearest large city, Charlottesville, VA. A busy, college town, it offers many enriching and entertaining opportunities for days off.
