Hello there! My name is Sam, a 27 year old born and raised in Glencoe, but I spend a lot of my time travelling these days, living the workaway, couchsurfing nomadic life.
My parents have been running the Centre for 31 years now, and I have been involved on/off for most of my life. The centre is a registered charity, spectacularly set amongst the majestic mountains, lochs and glens of Glencoe - famous for being one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the Scottish highlands.
As a charity we raise funds that enable us to offer bursaries each year to those for whom the cost of participation is out of reach and to assist with the Scottish Attainment Challenge. Groups from less privileged areas of the country, including many children who've never had the opportunity to experience the beauty of their own countryside nor even leave their own cities, are those to whom we most wish to provide such opportunities for, and all of our fundraising endeavours are essential in being able to continue financing these visits as, unlike many mordern charities, we are truly non profit.
However, every August, the centre closes for three weeks. This year, for the first time, I will be re-opening the centre for these weeks and converting it into a temporary Backpackers Hostel! Primarily as a fundraising venture for the centre so as to help it continue in its usual function, but also in order to help try and ease the vast over-demand for accommodation that has been arising over the past few years in what is the busiest month for the tourist trade.
I am looking for sociable, positive, love-filled workawayers to come hang out and give me a hand with the help between the 10th and 30th of August, you would be welcome for the entire duration or for only a few days. As your schedule, or your desires, permit!
If you've any questions at all don't hesitate to ask!
PS: We have two three year old cats who have just recently moved here from the city and taken their first steps into the outside world. They are absolutely adorable and love to play and go for walks around the garden with me, and probably you!
Help in the house
You will be situated in the heart of the scottish highlands, free to access my wealth of local knowledge and explore the beauty and culture of our land!
Glencoe is a place with a rich political and spiritual history. From the ballachulish bog goddess, to the still lively yet rarely seen pagan traditions, to the viking invaders, to the infamous massacre of the MacDonald clan, it is a quite perfect spot from which to both explore the vast wealth of nature and scenery, as well as to engulf yourself within the history and present state of scotland and better understand its people and politics.
Help will be in assisting me with the daily cleaning of the building and looking after the gardens, but will also largely involve just being around to keep an eye on things and looking after/chatting with the guests so that I don't work myself into the ground.
You will be staying in our staff accomodation, which means a private one-bed room or a shared (with another workawayer) two-bed room, with your own guest-free shower-room, as well as access to the rest of the building and facilities. I will provide three vegetarian/vegan (as you wish) meals a day, including one cooked meal. I'm afraid I do no eat meat and, for my own ethical reasons, will not be able to purchase any...
If you're into funghi... august is prime chanterelle foraging season, and I will happily share my stocks with/teach you how to identify them in the wild..!
If you love mountains, lochs, trees, rivers, waterfalls then you will have endless fun playing in the vast wilderness of nature that is all around us! If you don't love nature, perhaps reconsider! There is a river you can swim in in the back garden, beautiful walks all around, a world famous pub with live music in case you want to let your hair down, bus stops 200meters away that will take you to glasgow/edinburgh, fort william skye.. (though personally I hitch everywhere, often arriving before the bus..). It's a pretty perfect base from which to explore the highlands and islands.
