We are a family living in a beautiful part of North Lincolnshire. We have a small private yard, Arabian stud with stallions, brood mares and young stock as well as Endurance horses from novice to International Team prospects in almost 30 acres of varied pasture. We compete most weekends of the season and workawayers are invited to join us.
We prefer those with previous equine experience to help with our endurance horses. There may be opportunity to also work with young stock.
Those without previous experience are welcome.
Although we are situated in a small village there are bus links to the nearest town, Scunthorpe and Hull is approximately 30 minutes away. We are also close to South Humberside airport and Doncaster airport.
We are looking for hard working, friendly people who are able to help independently. There are also voluntary tasks that does not entail working with horses .
The tasks outside can sometimes be physically demanding. It is advised to being strong shoes and warm waterproof clothing. Gloves are also advised.
Riding and competition maybe available to more competent riders. Please bring your own riding hat.
There are some tasks in the house available for those who prefer.
We prefer a reasonable understanding of English. Equine terminology can be quite challenging! But fun exchanging different words for the same thing! We look forward to learning your words too.
Single workawayers will be accommodated in the house unless request otherwise.
Team work is key in our yard.
Please note that although there is a small livery business run on the yard it is operated totally separately from our own personal horses (we have 13 of our own). All the horses in the livery yard are all "Do it yourself" and workawayers are only asked to work with our horses as volunteers.

Alkborough is one of a cluster of small villages in North Lincolnshire. Our house overlooks the meeting of the River Trent and the Ouse, creating the River Humber. The views are spectacular. Winterton is the nearest town with a small supermarket. There is a bus service from the village to the nearest large town of Scunthorpe. There is a railway and bus station there etc. The Megabus also stops here.
We are a busy house. Especially in the summer. The village has an active evening club which welcomes visitors to the area.
All our workawayers are included in any activity we are involved in if they choose including visits to the local area and even further afield.
Our property borders Alkborough Flatts which is managed by the Environment Agency and is a haven for wildfowl and other birds. Most of our workawayers enjoy walking in this area and observing the wildlife. We have a limited knowledge of the wild birds in the area but share what we know!
Workawayers are welcome to join us at any time to improve their English. My grandson is always willing to help with this!
My daughter also has twin toddlers to provide extra entertainment!
Physical outdoor help in all aspects of horse care and welfare. A responsible, kind attitude towards animals and the ability to self motivate. Horse care is primarily about routine. Tasks can include feeding, rugs, turning out, mucking out, field care plus all the extra tasks around the yard to ensure the maintenance of the high standards we have here necessary to compete our horses at the level we do. There maybe ridden work available including schooling, canter training, lunging and grooming. Also fence management, general yard maintenance and field management.
Those with no equine experience are welcome.
Our personal yard is separate from the livery barn.

Time off is usually every afternoon and weekends giving workawayers time to explore the local area. There is a bus into town where all the usual activities can be found - a gym, cinema, shopping centre, museum, swimming pool etc. There is an opportunity to visit the city of Sheffield if they wish as there is a lift available. The historical town of Barton-upon-Humber is a bus ride away or they are welcome to have a lift when I fetch grandchildren from nursery. There is a lso a bus to Hull the 2018 European City of Culture. The east coast is a short train ride away.
