Our earth bag home is built!
It's on to landscaping, finish plastering the earth bag retaining walls, rock walls, and finishing touches to make this place really shine.
Ours is a high-vibe environment — drug and alcohol free — with music, storytelling, yoga, chi gong, meditation and the like welcome.
The house we built is small, and becoming more beautiful as each step gets completed. It's an artist's home, built and designed on a small budget, with much creativity.
Much gratitude to Kenny, our maverick builder. He's built several sustainable homes, and even a school in Nepal — from earthships to traditional adobe, and his now-favorite, earth bag. We hope to welcome him back for some weekend workshops in the future. For now, he's on to his next gig, so I'm counting on the Workaway community to rock it.
This place, Miracolo (pronounced me rah´coe low), is an off-grid home within Taos County NM building permit codes — the first earth bag building to go through the whole system and get signed off!
Women and men of varied skills are welcome. Previous building experience is not required — being good natured is. A willingness to handle a shovel and move some rocks is par for the course. If you have building, landscaping, or gardening skills, please mention them when you write. We encourage the learning environment to go both ways. With just a 5-hour work day, there's plenty of free time to explore the area.
We're located in the high desert just north of Taos, New Mexico. The Rio Grande Gorge is a short walk — I call it my back yard — with two natural hot springs in the close distance. The night skies are amazing, the Milky Way highly visible most nights. The Taos valley is surrounded by mountains, and there are great hiking trails, and day trips in every direction. The town of Taos is about a 20 minute drive. It's known for its arts and multi-cultural locals, with the Taos Pueblo dating back more than a thousand years. For a small town, it has a variety of attractions: art galleries, a great music scene, local theater, museums, a coffee culture, several good restaurants, and the great outdoors. Our back yard is part of the Rio Grande National Monument.

Help in the house
For me, the one who lives in the house we've built, the best thing about this project is the people who have come together. I'm amazed by how these beautiful people are thanking me for this opportunity to help me build my house. I thank them! Of course, I understand how they are benefitting by learning and sharing in this community. People who didn't know each other before, joined together through a common interest and passion in sustainable living, become fast friends if even for a day. We are all learning so much about building, and about ourselves.
We would ask that you join us in the tasks of building walls, moving rocks in creative ways, and help keeping up camp & house. There are plenty of tasks that don't need much experience. We'll be doing landscaping. An ability and willingness to work with a shovel and just plain do what needs to be done is great. We offer our volunteers a breakfast of solar cooked oatmeal (the fancy kind with nuts, seeds and fruit), and simple yet delicious vegan lunches and dinners that are usually solar cooked. We ask for advance planning of your visit. Last minutes are not so easy on this end.
We have spots for camp tents, a flat place to park a van or small camper. There's a camp fire ring, solar ovens, and solar showers. We would ask that you bring your own towels, only biodegradable soaps, work gloves, work shoes, sun hats/protection, and creativity. Your musical instruments and voice are welcome.
We live in a very unique place. Taos has been a destination, for artists, seekers, and finders for generations. The natural beauty is undeniable. There's a quirkiness here that is well accepted and appreciated.
The Taos Peublo is one, if not the, oldest still inhabited villages in North America. Its architecture is pretty much the same as it was a thousand years ago. Definitely a recommended outing.
We look forward to sharing our beautiful corner of the world with you.
