Description
We reside in a rural setting within the Northwest region of Ireland, situated amidst the picturesque Benbulben mountain range, nestled between Sligo Town and Rosses Point. Our family, consisting of young children, resides on a functioning agricultural property, primarily engaged in both cattle and equine farming. We bred Connemara ponies and Irish Sport Horses.

Our daily life involves managing the demands of both family and farm responsibilities, making for a dynamic and occasionally hectic household. Despite our tranquil countryside location, we enjoy convenient access to local amenities. We are within a five-minute walk of an hourly bus service connecting us to the nearby town and village. For those who prefer a more active exploration of the area, we offer a variety of bicycles for your use.

Consequently, we are seeking an individual who can undertake childcare duties, including transporting our children to school (a valid, clean driving license is essential), meal preparation, and assisting with homework. Our work arrangements fluctuate between home-based and off-site, necessitating flexibility from our prospective candidate. In return, we are committed to accommodating your exploration of our region, provided you work harmoniously with our scheduling requirements. Generally, this role provides a three-day weekend.

The help we request depends on the season and the workaway. To begin with this is a cultural exchange- we learn about your culture and you learn about ours. We have four children and a very busy household so any help is gratefully accepted. On the farm, jobs change with the season, depending on whether animals are calving or we are doing silage harvesting or preparing horses for events. The house is very busy from 6.30am-9am and after 12am until 7.00pm. We'd be happy to guide and advise where to go to experience the best the county and country have to offer. There is so much to do if you get out and about.

Camilla's level of English is truly excellent, making communication effortless and enjoyable. This language proficiency has enabled her to connect with our family, our friends, and the local community in an exceptional manner. Her ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds has been remarkable, and she has become an integral part of our local community.
In her role as an au pair, Camilla has taken care of our four children, aged 13, 11, 7, and 4, with immense dedication and care. Her commitment to their well-being is evident in her daily routines, from getting them ready for school in the morning to picking them up after school and driving them to various activities. Her genuine concern for our children's safety and development has been truly remarkable.
Furthermore, Camilla's culinary skills are nothing short of exceptional. She has delighted our family and friends with her gourmet-style Italian cooking, effortlessly preparing banquet-style meals for parties and special occasions. Her culinary talents have left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to savour her dishes.
Beyond her role as an au pair and chef, Camilla has actively embraced the farming life on our property. Her willingness to get involved in various agricultural tasks, such as birthing calves and foals, preparing fields for animals, fencing, rearing chicks from their earliest days, tending to and showing immense love to our dog and several cats, shearing sheep, assisting with silage and slurry, and the care and preparation of our animals for winter, has been extraordinary. Camilla has proven herself to be a dedicated and hardworking individual, showing a strong work ethic and a passion for the farm life.
What truly sets Camilla apart, however, is her warm-hearted nature and her commitment to the local community. She has integrated herself seamlessly into the fabric of our village, offering her assistance at the local veterinary surgeons, providing hospitality to older members of the community, walking dogs for those who are unable to do so themselves, and participating in various community activities. Her genuine care for others and her enthusiastic involvement in the community have made her a beloved figure in our village.
In conclusion, Camilla is not just an exceptional Workaway/ au pair; she has become the heart of our family and an indispensable part of our local community. Elise arrived into complete chaos in our home. Our six year old son had just been diagnosed with epilepsy following a lengthy stay in hospital where he was critically ill. The day she arrived our daughter tested positive for Covid and began self-isolating in her room. A week later, we all tested positive including Elise. Despite been very ill, she… read more still took part in family life and played with the children.
Elise has the gentlest, kind, courteous nature. She endeared herself to everyone in the family, I think over the three weeks she began to understand our crazy family.
Elise’s main tasks were to help with the housework and with our children. Our children adored her; she was always ready to play with them. She painted rocks with the smaller boys, took them on their first bus ride into town and out to Strandhill for a walk and ice-cream. In addition, she signed them all up to the libraries’ summer stars programme (they are all still reading, Elise, thanks to you!).
Elise made friends with people her own age easily and became involved in the local community of workaways and au pairs. She visited Mullaghmore and a Jazz Festival in Sligo town with the group. She is really interested in history and took herself off to Galway and Derry to explore the countryside.
When Elise arrived she was very quiet and shy; however, through the experience she found her voice with the children. She was firm but fair; and they adored the ground she walked on. Elise did a terrific job working with us and minding our children. She was an asset to our home during her workaway experience. She has excellent written and verbal communication skills, is extremely organized, can work independently, and is able to effectively multi-task to ensure that all projects are completed in a timely manner.
Because of her effectiveness, I even gave her additional responsibilities, including taking the children to the beach. Elise went above and beyond in that assignment, as she does in all tasks. When I picked them up a couple of hours later, they were sandy, wet and laughing hysterically.
Elise was very much a novice baker when she arrived. However, as her confidence grew she began to experiment. She made fantastic tacos for the whole family. In addition, she has perfected her scones and we are really pleased to see that she is continuing to make them for her family in France.
Elise was always willing to offer her assistance and had an excellent rapport with the many neighbours and friends who regularly call to our home. This would be particularly valuable for any company she may work in in the future as she can effectively communicate with people in English and in French. My own parents were completely enamoured with her and they invited her to dinner before she departed.
Elise is an excellent listener. When learning a new language it is important to ensure you are listening more than you speak it; Elise is very careful to listen intently. In this manner, she is exposed to the correct pronunciation of words and it will vastly improve her understanding.
Things will not always go to plan and that’s okay. Some days you will make progress and other days you will not. Soft skills are an essential part of successful language learning, I have no doubt that Elise’s soft skills will serve her in good stead in the future. She would be an asset to any employer, and I wholeheartedly recommend her for any endeavour she chooses to pursue.
Despite contacting Covid during her stay and contending with the worst summer weather we have ever experienced, Elise was a joy to have in our home and family. We look forward to her return.

It is very hard to summarise in a few sentences the impact Mewen had on our family and the wider community. Everywhere we look and everyone we talk to speaks about him and his gentle, kind, courteous nature. He honestly became a member of the family who was loved by us all and a member of the community.
His community work extended from helping… read more with a sick cow for a local neighbour to pulling another neighbour out of a bind in his jeep with the tractor. Everyone locally knew him and loved him. He also helped out dehorning and with animal welfare on our in-laws farm. He was a key member of the silage team helping out with preparing the silage slab, helping out with the silage and covering the silage. This required working long hours- there was much physical work.
However, in a personal context Mewen was a very trusted member of our family. Our children adored him; he was always ready to play with him. He was happy to jump on the trampoline with the whole family, to pier jump with the older children or sand dune jump with the younger ones. He picked the children up from various extra-curricular events on occasion and dropped them off; the older two very proud of our fabulous workaway boasting to friends that he was teaching them to speak French! On the last morning, in the midst of a very scary medical emergency with one of our younger boy, Mewen took over the running of the house and allowed us to get to the hospital.
There is a very long list of farm help that Mewen helped us with. He was excellent working on tractors and with animals. There was a wide variety of work to engage with; spraying, cutting, chopping. There is a very long list of the work that Mewen was involved in. He is a very quick learner and willing and able to take on all challenges.
We had a conversation towards the end of Mewen’s stay with us. I asked him what he had learned, he spoke about the importance of saying ‘yes’. This seems to be the critical part of what Mewen learned. He said yes to everything- from helping with the kids, to visiting Galway, attending the Wild Roots Festival locally and heading off surf every time the waves were good.
We know that Mewen will be amazing in every single role he will turn his hands too. It was a real pleasure to work closely with him over the past two months, sharing the same work space the majority of the time. He is meticulous about hygiene and cleanliness. Mewen showed excellent communication skills and consistently exceeded our expectations. On a personal level, he's charismatic and well-spoken, both qualities that have served him well in his any role he decides to get involved with.
Allow me to point out three examples of Mewen’s strengths. First, Mewen brought great value to our family by consistently exceeding our requests. Mewen has an understanding of animal welfare. He is a joy to work with.
Second, Mewen has a very strong grasp of communication. Finally, Mewen has proven himself to be a strong cultural fit here in Cregg. He's always ready to lend a helping hand to his teammates and contributes in every sense.
In closing, I'd like to restate my strong support for Mewen. I'm confident that he will surpass your expectations in this new role. Mewen is driven, self-confident, proactively helpful, and smart, and I know he will continue to find success in his future career.
Mewen didn’t just become part of our family he also became part of the wider community. From my own parents and all the neighbours who regularly call into our house everyone became a fan of Mewen. We were heartbroken to see him heading off into the sunshine and back to France, we are looking forward to having them back in Sligo sooner rather than later. There are not enough words to express how positive our experience was with him joining our family.

During the Easter vacations I spent 16 wonderful days with my 10 year old daughter with this lovely and busy family near Sligo. It was our first workaway experience and our first trip to Ireland, and now we have got new members of - our already international - family in Ireland as well.
I helped wherever I could, in the garden, around the house,… read more with the kids, on the farm, and even one night I assisted the birth of a calf.
Carol is a great cook and indulged us with fresh homemade scones and lovely dishes. She even noticed in the first few days that I liked yogurt for breakfast and to drink sparkling water and from then on there was always yogurt in the fridge and sparkling water at home. Since we were interested in a cultural exchange, I also cooked and baked typical Italian and German dishes.
Carol and Henry are very open hosts and you can tell they have traveled a lot and have great experience with foreign workers in their beautiful, modern, and very comfortable house. For this reason they are very open-minded, helpful and sociable. They let us - whenever possible - get to know the region around Sligo on great walks and Carol also taught us a lot of Irish history. On Sundays we went to church together and our daughter even got the chance of playing the church organ.... We also visited grandparents from both sides who are as welcoming as Carol and Henry and treated our daughter like a grandchild.
Carol and Henry have a very fine sense of humor and we got along very well. There were always enough breaks between the work and Carol never forgot to offer tea.
I enjoyed our conversations and I learned a lot about the Irish school system and prehistoric sights.
The 4 children are also super welcoming.
We enjoyed spending time with all four of them
Whether it was pulling weeds, planting hedges, mucking out the barn, putting in the fence, cleaning horses, collecting eggs (chocolate Easter eggs and real ones), baking apple pie, making giant soap bubbles, reading aloud, painting, jumping on the trampoline, watching movies,....
But the best was that I got to teach William how to ride a bike. I had promised him on the first weekend that we could do it together and 2 days before we left he was riding his bike like a world champion!
We will NEVER forget our time with this particularly warm and open-hearted family and are already looking forward to a return visit here in Germany or further stays with them in Ireland.

Hildegard and Elisabetta joined our family on the Thursday of the Easter holidays. I needed to be in Dublin for the weekend and so Hildegard organised that she could come early to be with the family for the weekend. When I arrived home from work on Thursday, they had already arrived. Elisabetta was already outside in the garden with our oldest two… read more children playing Gaelic football and getting to know them. Inside, Hildegard had helped with dinner and was in the middle of organising the toy cupboard which had been organised since it was put in place. This was the birth of a beautiful friendship between our families which I hope will continue for many years to come.
Hildegard and Elisabetta were good for our souls. We are all wrecked. It had been a long, tough spring. The weather was starting to get nice and Hildegard immediately set about to working in the garden, planting trees and weeding. She helped with the kids, getting up the middle of the night with our youngest son when he was sick and teaching him Italian when he was better. She taught me how to cook a number of Italian dishes, including focaccia, homemade pasta and pizzas.
In addition, her help was invaluable on the farm. She assisted at the birth of a calf which was difficult due to underlying pre calving issue. She also help looking after a horse who had a sore on his leg. She brought not only her physical help but also an in-depth knowledge of animal husbandry and medical care.
Elisabetta is a beautiful little girl. She is talented, fluent in English, German and Italian. She is creative and fun loving. She was a joy to have in the house. The kids really embraced her and she became an integral part of our family.
This stay was over the Easter holidays. Not only was Hildegard and Elisabetta involved in family Easter egg hunts, they were also involved in a charity Easter egg hunt for newly arrived Ukrainians to our area. Hildegard made huge bubbles attracting the children and adults to the event while Elisabetta painted rocks and entertained the children who attended. In addition, Hildegard added to the celebrations not only with culinary delights such as traditional German and Italian food, but also lots of fun, frolics and friendship.
Hildegard and Elisabetta didn’t just become part of our family they also became part of the wider community. From the local parish priest (which is a very Irish thing) to my own parents and all the neighbours who regularly call into our house everyone became a fan of Hildegard and Elisabetta. We were heartbroken to see them heading off into the sunshine and back to Germany, we are looking forward to having them back in Sligo sooner rather than later. There are not enough words to express how positive our experience was with them joining our family.

I stayed with this family for four months and at first I didn't plan on staying that long but they made me feel like I was part of the family. It was my first workaway experience and it was hard to leave them because I took every member of the family into my heart!

My main tasks were doing chores, cooking, minding the kids, helping them with… read more homework, walking the dog (Oscar) and helping on the farm.

Carol and Henry are very open-minded, friendly and loving parents to their children. They made so much possible for me, like Fiddle lessons which I really enjoyed, to make sure that I get the best Irish experiences possible. Also, they were always trying to connect me to others and I got a job through their contacts, where I met lots of amazing people. Moreover, they wanted to show me the region and on Sundays we visited beautiful places, went on great walks to one of the beaches nearby and met with the rest of the incredibly loving family members, who I also fell in love with.

Carol is a talented, ambitious, helpful, thoughtful, understanding, disciplined, humorous, caring and talkative person with an open heart and I enjoyed our conversations. She gave me the feeling of a mother because she wanted me to feel at home. I learned a lot from her, like baking and cooking, or through our conversations about any topic and she tried to always correct my language which was very helpful to improve my English.

Henry also is very talkative, open-minded and he loves to make jokes, so we had lots of funny conversations and he was always eager to show and teach me things all around the farm . I even drove the tractor and had great new experiences which I couldn't have had without him. He is knowledgeable about cattle and I usually helped him on Tuesdays and Saturdays where I learned a lot.

Their four children Thomas, Jessica, William and Robert couldn't have been more welcoming and loving towards me! It felt like they were and still are my brothers and sisters and they were eager to show me their home and the surrounding area. I learned a lot about Irish culture and language as Thomas and Jessica were teaching me Irish. The children and I cooked and baked together, played funny games, went for walks and runs, jumped on the trampolin, drew, watched movies and made music together. I helped the 3 older kids with preparing for school and their homework. Every Tuesday, I minded Robert, the youngest, when we went on walks with the dog, cycled to Rosses Point or were outside on the farm. Thomas already is a very helpful hand on the farm and we sometimes worked with Henry on building fences or moving cattle and I even saw cows calving. Jessica and I shared many interests, like drawing, baking, singing and running. I really enjoyed talking to her and we laughed a lot. I also loved reading stories to William and Robert in the evenings and the two of them are such heart-warming boys. I already miss the whole family so much and I am so happy to have met them and to have had many experiences that will assist me in the future.

To this day we share memories and pictures and I already am so excited to see them again some time!

The girl who made us as a family fall in love with Feta cheese and salad… lots of salad. Eleanor (Elli) Rech became part of our family in September 2020, just as our children were going back to school and as our cows were beginning to calve. While she lived and worked with our family and on our farm, she also secured off farm work as a barista and… read more a waitress in a local café, endearing herself to all the locals. She got to know most of the population of our little rural seaside village and all of the different characters who routinely call into our family home (Covid 19 notwithstanding). She was equally excited to see her family when they arrived after Christmas.

Elli proved herself to be friendly, kind and caring. She has excellent interpersonal skills which will serve her well. She keeps a daily diary of all the comings and goings of her life, her workaway adventure and much more. She quickly gathered a large group of friends (both her own age and much older around her); she enjoyed socialising with these friends. She trekked in the local area, eager to explore new places and experiences. She made some very fast friends with a number of girls, and we are pleased to learn that one of these girls is joining her on her next workaway experience. We were very impressed with her ability to include other new friends into her large gang of ‘newly acquainted’, including a Spanish au pair who arrived in Sligo in the last few weeks of Elli’s stay. In addition, she was joined by a German friend Nora for a week in Sligo. Both girls assimilated very quickly into the family and household. They also escaped to the allure of the ‘big smoke’ in Dublin to sightsee and visit a nightclub (Covid 19 permitting) when that was still something people could do.

Elli is fun loving and adventurous. She was enchanted by the Atlantic Ocean and engaged in open sea swimming with both our children, her friends from the café and her family on many occasions. She is not in the least perturbed by the inclement Irish weather, happy to cycle to her job as a barista in the typical Irish weather- rain, sleet and occasionally snow! She loves to work out and frequently runs. She participated in the Sligo Park Run with our family while staying here.
Elli speaks perfect English. She works hard to read and write in English frequently. While she was staying with us she picked up a number of idioms and sayings, typical of the West of Ireland. She is capable of identifying different accents and has no difficulty in switching between English and German. Her level of proficiency and fluency is a huge asset which we have no doubt will serve her well.

Elli is extremely trustworthy and capable. Given my work and family commitments, we had to leave her overnight with our family on a number of occasions. She was capable and confident. The children really loved her. She became more of an older sister to them than someone who was staying as a workaway. She taught them how to play music and sing; in addition, the older two children learned quite a bit of German during her stay. Her capacity to meet the children at their level and stretch them was really impressive. In addition, she was excellent with our toddler who is working his way through the terrible twos. She was firm and fair throughout all her dealing with the children, even when their own parents were starting to despair and lose their patience. The children are broken hearted that she has departed; she was a huge part of their lives for the past four months. They are left some with beautiful memories- walks on the beach, a visit to Balmoral Show, Glencar Waterfall, trick or treating at Halloween, the Late, Late Toy show, visits to Christmas markets and Santy’s arrival at Christmas.

Elli was also involved in occasional work on our farm. As we have an autumn calving rota, Elli was occasionally asked to check cows to make sure that they weren’t having any issues while calving, while we were away from the farm. She was efficient including helping deliver a calf in difficulty breathing. In addition, she helped our son clean our barns and with general maintenance on the farm, including with stacking timber for the winter. She is an excellent driver and we were very happy to have her drive the tractor off road on the farm.

Elli is a vegetarian with a love of Feta cheese and salad. She cooked for the family on numerous occasions, using a wide repertoire of ingredients. She learned to make excellent seafood chowder using fresh and frozen ingredients, as well as Irish scones. We also really enjoyed her German cookies which she made coming up to Christmas. She is a capable and confident cook who knows how to access high quality ingredients and appreciates the value of eating well.

We would be very happy to recommend her for any position which may become available in the future. She is missed in our family, however, we know that she will be back to see us all again soon. She will be an asset to any employer who is lucky enough to employ her.

Michelanglo was a pleasant and very hardworking person. It was a pleasure to live with and work with him.
He helped out a lot on our farm; working with cattle and cows during our calving season, helping with herding and helping with wood cutting and preparation, helping with silage, helping look after our chickens and our dog, Molly. He was… read more always willing to help, polite and not afraid to ask questions if he was unsure of how to proceed with the task. He was always willing to try new tasks and intrigued about the management of the farm and the husbandry of animals. It was a joy to explain and show him how things worked as he learned and worked. He is physically strong and very fit and was well able to keep up with the pace of work on our farm, particularly during this busy summer season.
Family and friends found him to be intelligent, well read, knowledgeable, excellent company with excellent interpersonal skills. It was very easy to host Michelanglo as he was the perfect host guest and our three children adored the ground he walked on. He was great fun, interested in the local community, the history, culture and customs of the area.
He enjoyed exploring local cities such as Galway and Enniskillen, as well as Dublin. In addition, he cycled and explored the terrain closer to home, climbing mountains, cycling to Lissadell, sea swimming in Rosses Point and even enjoying a random encounter with a neighbour from Italy in the local ice cream parlour, Fabios. His real passion is football and it was interesting that he knew more about the local soccer team than either my husband or I. He was able to cite players, positions and achievements and was thrilled to attend a football match on the last evening of his stay, after watching and listening to the All-Ireland Hurling victory the day previous.
Michelanglo speaks very good Engllish and continues to make progress. After a fortnight in our home, he could recognise and correct his own grammatical mistakes. He was a very consistent and careful student with a very interesting way of associating a new word with a word in one of the many languages he is already fluent in.
He has a vast wealth of intelligence and experience, is well travelled and well read- he can discuss topics as diverse as the economic situation in China to the historical conflict in Northern Ireland.
We were very priviliged to have met Michelanglo as part of the workaway programme and hope that he will be a frequent visitor to our home and family over the coming years. We would be very pleased to recommend him to any other host family who may be looking for a geniune, hardworking, reliable, intelligent, funny and honest person to live and work with them.
