    JOIN OUR TEAM!

We are looking for compassionate, energetic, helpful people to join our wonderful crew. Our multi-faith community welcomes those who are seeking to grow spiritually while enjoying our quiet, beautiful farm. This part-time volunteer opportunity is a great fit for anyone who wants time and space for reflective contemplation. We prefer those who can commit to at least a three-month stay. We feel that the more time you spend here, the more you take away from the experience. Proof of covid vaccination required.

We have several types of opportunities available for folks looking to spend time here.

    - Household help. Cooking simple vegetarian meals. Assisting the caregiver of an elderly person with mobility issues.(no lifting or personal care). Light housekeeping. Seasonal chores (picking blackberries, bottling olive oil, making jams, etc.— don't worry, we'll teach you how!)

    - Graphic design, photography, social media posting. Looking for a creative person with some knowledge of graphic programs and social media platforms.

    - Farm help. Manual labor including gardening, harvesting, landscaping.

WHO WE ARE: a CCOF-certified organic farm, but it is so much more. Founded in 1976, our farm is a small, independent multi-faith monastic community, located in beautiful northwestern Sonoma County. We are progressive and liberal and have friends on all spiritual paths and none. It is a 501c3 non-profit. Our back forest is designated "Forever Wild." All 91 acres of our land are protected by a Conservation Easement that ensures our property will be perpetually protected from overdevelopment and agribusiness.

WHAT WE DO: We always need help with the household and with graphics as we send out several weekly publications. Outdoor activities vary with the season. Spring means preparing gardens, starting greenhouse seeds, mowing olive fields. Throughout the summer we do extensive gardening, harvesting, canning, and preserving. In autumn there is olive harvest and pressing oil.. Winter begins with our Christmas Faire and packaging wreaths for sale, processing orders in the office. Then it is time to prune the trees and the cycle starts again.

At our farm we make award-winning Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil from our CCOF certified olive groves. We raise fruits and vegetables and provide fresh produce for our Food Pantry, helping neighbors in need, along with running an "Honor Farmstand" for the community.

As a multi-faith community, we welcome those who are interested in spiritual growth and experience, not doctrine or dogma. For some people, this will be a step along the way; for others it may be long-term association with us.

**COVID-19: We invite only vaccinated workawayers to apply, as some residents here are quite vulnerable.**

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: We welcome 1 to 4 helpers at a time. Length of stay varies, but we typically ask for at least a two-month commitment. Usually helpers do 4-5 hours per day on weekdays. Helpers stay in a charming 1902 farmhouse with remodeled kitchen and bathrooms. They cook and eat on their own. We cannot accommodate children or pets. Our primary language is English; one of us understands Italian.

As the founders enter our senior years, we are thinking about the future of the community. In addition to short- and medium-term volunteers, we invite individuals and couples who have a clear vision of their desired future to reach out to us about long-term stays and leadership possibilities. Ideally, we are looking for people in their 30s-40s who are interested in multi-faith communities, organic farming, and community service. We have space on our land for RVs and trailers, rooms in the farmhouse where the volunteers stay, and are open to providing other housing possibilities for the right fit. Families with school age children may also apply. We welcome people seriously interested in becoming a long-term or permanent part of the team to contact us and discuss potential next steps.

OPPORTUNITY: We are in Annapolis, CA, just 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean. As our area lacks public transportation, having a car is helpful although not essential. We have a swimming pool. In addition to being near ocean beaches and the picturesque coastal town of Gualala, we are also not far from hiking trails in the Redwoods. We are 1.25 hours from Healdsburg and the popular Sonoma County wine country.

If you wish to join us, please take a few minutes to answer these questions in an email, and we'll take it from there!
    1. Why you would like to Workaway here?
    2. When could you come, and how long would you like to stay?

    FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
    • Transportation – getting here. We are in the hamlet of Annapolis, in the northwest corner of Sonoma County, 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean and near Sea Ranch and the village of Gualala. It’s a 1.25-hour drive from Healdsburg, north of Santa Rosa on Hwy 101, and about a 3-hour drive from San Francisco and Berkeley. • Groceries. Workaway volunteers receive $50/week for groceries, and fresh produce from the farm is available in season. This is not payment, but a living stipend. You may take food from our Food Pantry donations. All diets are welcome. There may be some basics in the farmhouse kitchen such as pasta, rice, oil, oats, salt, and pepper. On your way, stop in Petaluma (if you are driving up Hwy 1 along the coast) or Santa Rosa or Healdsburg (if you are arriving via Healdsburg and Skaggs Springs Rd.) for groceries. Gualala (10 miles north of the Annapolis Rd on Hwy 1) has two, small grocery stores.

    • Telephone and Internet. Verizon service works well; unfortunately there is no other service for cell phones. The land line is available if necessary. There is wifi.

    • Workawayers help 4 hours per day, Monday-Friday.

    • Types of tasks. There is always cleaning, painting, and maintenance. Other tasks described above.

    • Accommodations. Workawayers stay in our remodeled 1902 farmhouse, which is furnished with towels, bed linens, cooking utensils, etc. Bathrooms and kitchen are shared. Smoking is not allowed. We have a Zero Tolerance policy for sexual harassment. No pets.

    • Atmosphere & Free Time. This is a peaceful place where we respect nature and each other. Workawayers typically have afternoons free. Folks spend time in various ways: exploring coastal trails, doing yoga, cooking, strolling among the olive groves, reading under the redwood trees (we have a small collection of books available), playing board/card games, going down to the ocean or river, and watching the amazing sunsets. Sometimes Workawayers go in to the “bustling metropolis” of Gualala for a cup of coffee or dinner! We do not encourage outings during Covid.

We ask for about 4 hours a day, Mon. - Fri. If we are especially busy and you would like to help extra hours, we will pay you. This only applies to volunteers from the United States. On your time off you may hike in the redwoods, go to the Pacific Ocean beaches just 7 miles away or enjoy our pool. You may want to go to San Francisco for the weekend. However, during the covid pandemic when you are within our "bubble", we ask you to remain on the property. Our guests are quiet and respectful. There is no nightlife or exciting social scene here. It is a remote area, ideal for nature lovers. We can offer only limited help with transportation. This is not a good place if you are looking for sight-seeing, cultural events, concerts, etc. It works well to have couples or friends come together so you will not be bored.
