We are two adults in the process of renovating a 300 year old ,traditional farmhouse situated in an idyllic mountain valley in the Julian Alps of NW Slovenia.
We want to,grow vegetables and embrace a sustainable lifestyle. We would be very pleased to encourage artistic ,creative ,practically minded helpers who have an interest and knowledge in ecological projects. For example water harvesting or solar power.
At present we can only accommodate volunteers from MAY TO SEPTEMBER.
Cooking / shopping
Help with Eco project
Help in the house
Help with Computers / internet
Some of the work is quite physically demanding, it could involve building stone walls ,installing fence posts and digging.
There is a lot of grass cutting needed and possibly tending to vegetable crops. We generally begin work about 8.30am and finish at lunchtime as it can be hot in the summer and afterwards we find that people like to relax in a hammock or have a siesta!
On other days we might like help with painting the house or construction projects. You will not be be asked to cook but to help to wash up after meals.
As I am an artist I like to have time to paint in the afternoons ..
We welcome people who respect the peace of the valley and are respectful of our home. If you are good with tools and know how to use them that is a real bonus!
If you have skills such as carpentry or building experience you will be especially welcome and if you have a musical instrument to play that would be nice also. We welcome volunteers by arrangement from MAY TO SEPTEMBER and ask that you stay at least 10 days.
There are 2 comfortable double bedrooms available within the house and additionally the possibility of sleeping outside in a tent during the summer if this is preferred. Volunteers can share the living areas ,kitchen and bathroom. The kitchen and bathroom are basic and awaiting refurbishment but we still eat well. Please do not expect hotel standards with long hot showers however. We have washing lines but no washing machine.
The farmhouse is quite remote , set high up at 720 m in meadows , at the head of a mountain valley surrounded by amazing peaks yet is only 6 km from a tourist town offering many adventure sports such as kayakking or the beautiful turquoise green Soca River. There is also hiking ,mountain biking ,climbing and horse-riding to be enjoyed locally.
Day trips are possible by bus , to Ljubliana , to the famous caves at Postojna and Lake Bled.
The local town has many lively bars, sports facilities such as tennis and beach volleyball and a vibrant tourist population during the summer. We may have bicycles available for volunteers to use depending on numbers. Local taxis are available costing around 10 euros per trip.Workawayers must be able to demonstrate that they have adequate health insurance please. Bring a sleeping bag as there is no washing machine.
There is free internet in the local town in the cafes but NOT at the house unless you have data roaming on your phone or a dongle for your laptop. Mobile phone signal is usually very good especially Vodaphone.
We have no television but plenty of DVDs and books and a nice outdoor fire-pit to sit around and hear everyone's stories.
Time for a digital detox maybe? Here is the ideal place. Remember 1994 !?
Limited internet access
We have pets
We are smokers
More than two
We have had some wonderful volunteers staying here and they are all amazed by how beautiful and peaceful it is in the valley. There are some incredible walks in the mountains right from the house and local places of interest to visit by bicycle or a lift by car may be available sometimes. There is internet available in Bovec in many cafes etc. Bovec is a tourist town and very lively in the summer with many sporty people and of course, nature lovers.
PLEASE NOTE that transport will NOT be available daily to the local town , Bovec which is 6 km away. Our valley is up a STEEP road for 2 km of the distance and this can feel remote for those volunteers who like to party in town. The situation is best for people who like mountain walking ( plenty of those) or just chilling out in lovely natural surroundings.
