My wife and I 'retired' to Spain 5 years ago and bought a neglected Farmhouse in the hills of Andalusia which has now been professionally renovated, with a new roof, windows, doors, tiling, bathrooms, electrics, drainage and A NEW SWIMMING POOL!! :-)
We live here with our 'rescue friends', a Jack Russell X and 2 cats, so any volunteers will need to be animal friendly and not have pet allergies, as sofas will need to be shared!
We welcome friendly, sensible volunteers, with common sense, a positive attitude and an interest in helping us improve our house and land.
This is strictly a non-smoking environment - with no exceptions - neither do we accept volunteers with pets or children,
We offer you accommodation and food (Vegetarian/Vegan) with all the usual modern conveniences, including internet (main house).
Previously, we have limited ourselves to just 2 volunteers at a time, but we are open to accepting multiple applications (No groups!) either staying in one of the 3 ground floor bedrooms of the main house, or in our Caravan, which is located some 50 metres away, in its' own 'plot', with long distance views of the Subbetica National Park.
The Caravan is a 4-Berth (used as a 2-Berth with dinette area) and benefits from all usual Caravan services, but there is a new Bathroom, located 25 metres away, which is also available. Sleeping arrangements are either as 2 singles or a Double Bed, so would suit a couple or two friends.
If you have any questions, please ask!
We are looking for fit, healthy, NON-SMOKING volunteers who are willing to undertake a variety of tasks, both internal and external.
Much of the tasks will be external, involving path laying/renovation, weeding, digging, planting and general landscaping.
The path laying will involve making cement and I have a mixer for this purpose if needed - otherwise, it can be done in smaller quantities in the wheelbarrow.
There is also a very small amount of internal decoration left to do, including painting, sanding/staining beams.
No particular skills are required for these tasks, but a positive attitude and willingness to carry out simple tasks with a decent level of diligence and good natured enthusiasm, is assumed.
If you enjoy (and are reasonably proficient) cooking simple, healthy food (predominantly vegetarian/vegan) then we would particularly welcome you!
It is assumed that you will also assist in the kitchen with food preparation, clearing up afterwards (either loading/unloading the dishwasher) or washing/drying up and generally keeping the communal areas clean and tidy on a regular basis - not just when you leave!
It is not acceptable to help yourself to food/drinks and leave the kitchen surfaces/floor/sink messy and dirty, even if you intend to clean up 'later'....
Equally, your room should not look like a 'tip' all day every day - you are adults and this is not a hotel with cleaning staff on hand 24/7 to clear up after you.....
These tasks do not form part of your 'working day' and do not get 'deducted' from the 5 hours work you will be doing.
Please note that we do NOT cater for the infinite number of dietary preferences that seem so popular these days - and will not accept volunteers with multiple 'food intolerances'.
If there are specific food ingredients that you must have, or large quantities of a particular item you need, then you are welcome to purchase it at your own expense - assuming it is available locally, which is not always the case in Spain.
Although my wife does not drink alcohol, I enjoy a glass of wine with my evening meal and you will be included in this if you wish, but we do not provide a 'free bar' for you to enjoy at your choosing and alcohol consumption is at my sole discretion.
The vast majority of the hard working volunteers we have welcomed into our home, have found no difficulty whatsoever in meeting these perfectly reasonable expectations.
However, we recently had 2 volunteers stay with us, who managed to set an entirely new (lower) standard of behaviour and regrettably, I have decided to document these basics to avoid the need to continually remind volunteers of their responsibilities - and the standards expected.
I would also like to ask that your Workaway Profile provides ALL the essential information about you (and anyone you are traveling with), is accurate/complete and that the photo(s) you upload are recent! We were all young once :-)
Occasionally, the person who arrives at my door, is quite different in appearance to the person I saw in the profile and then I find out that they have intolerances or specific dietary needs and numerous other likes/dislikes, which we are expected to cater for!?
I have also had one chap (a 40 year old, who thought is was 'OK' to go outside for a smoke - regrettably, he quickly discovered it wasn't.
I hope the inclusion of these rather blunt statements do not present you with the 'wrong impression' about considering being a volunteer here - but it is important to manage expectations (yours and ours) and to do so before you arrive!
We have been Hosting for over 3 years and have a very good record of positive feedback from the many super Workaway people (individuals and couples) who have contributed to our progress and whose company we have greatly enjoyed!
We look forward to hearing from you and are happy to answer any specific questions that you might have or provide additional information.

An excellent opportunity to visit a beautiful and unspoilt area of Spain, rich in history and with numerous places of interest nearby.
Located at 1,000 metres above sea level, there are long distance views and clean air, with low levels of traffic, Moorish Castles, Roman remains, friendly locals, authentic Spanish living, local Bars serving tapas free with your drink (not coffee/water!) and a generally relaxed way of living.
You may want to improve your Spanish or acquire your first few phrases to take back home along with many positive memories of stunning scenery and a way of life which has not essentially changed over time!
English, basic Spanish.....
The house is a detached Farmhouse (Cortijo) consisting of 4 bedrooms (3 on the ground floor) and all with en-suite bathrooms.
Volunteers will have use of either one of the downstairs bedrooms (one with a Double Bed, the other with two singles), or our Caravan, which is located about 50 metres from the main house and has it's own facilities - but there is also a brand new 'Pool Bathroom', some 25 metres away, which can be used.
There are excellent opportunities to walk through surrounding Olive groves and wonderful distant views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, some 40+ miles away. A lack of 'light pollution' means that star gazing at night is a wonderful thing to do!
We also have a dedicated indoor Yoga space (35 m2 approx), which those who are interested in Yoga can use for personal practice (there are a few mats for general use) - times by agreement.
This is Air-conditioned during hot weather and heated during colder times.
We are several miles from the nearest town of any real size (20,000+ pop) and public transport is non-existent, but we would be willing to provide lifts into the nearby towns a couple of times a week, for sight-seeing/food shopping in a genuine Spanish environment.
This would not suit 'party animals' who are looking for crowds and noise, although there is a local bar about 10 minutes walk away, which also serves food - where some basic Spanish will be required!
However, if you appreciate clean air and the tranquility of being in a rural environment, we'd love to hear from you!
I can collect you from the Bus Station in Alcala la Real, which is about 20 minutes from our house and an hour from Granada.
The property is about an hour from Granada, an hour and a half from Cordoba and Malaga is just under 2 hours distant.
