Hello to all kind and compassionate souls....
My name is Drew and I currently live in Asseradores, a small fishing village on the north west coast of Nicaragua, about 45 minutes north of Chinandega.
Essentially what I am trying to do is set up a permaculture homestead. When this project was in it's best phase I was able to eat breakfast out of my garden every day from my chickens eggs and my vegetable garden, had a working compost situtation, and well running irrigation to my garden. Right now things are in various phases of great to disrepair, mostly due to need to leave the country for work due to political conflict..etc.
My goal is to be able to produce enough food to sustain a solid amount of my own diet as well as have some left over to sell or share to the local community, make and sell juices or healthy meals/snacks etc. In addition, my goal would be to be able to provide local jobs, master classes on organic growing and reuse/recycle of trash (there is no municipal trash system, so I would like to set and example on re-purposing ideas) composting or vermi-culture and many other permaculture techniques. I plan to start these classes in the October time frame.
Also I have a small space with full sun that I would really like to build out as a raised bed situation for locals to come and use like a community garden. The biggest reason for the community garden idea is because I feel that most locals do not grow because they don't have access to enough water. I would either charge a small fee for the use of that space or trade a certain amount of work and create a system of rules which would help to guard the space from misuse and abuse.
I am looking into ways to develop the "money making" side of the business as I would use a percentage of the profits to fund the work I am doing and to funnel into community projects. Among the ideas are selling smoothies juices iced coffee, healthy snack etc from my kitchen, like a small garden cafe, also I would like to develop a nursery as there is no where to buy plants near by. I have the nursery started and set up but not much idea about what plants would be good (easy and grow well) and able to re-sell. (I'm not quite sure how to go about that) and also to sell the extra produce we have here from growing and potentially selling campsites because of the prime location I have right next to the Boom, the best wave in Nicaragua. Right now we currently only have one small garden bed but I plan to grow in other areas as well once the growing season comes. We are currently setting up a Dragon Fruit "patch" where we should have plenty of fruits coming in!
Currently my bodega where I store and sort my trash so that I can get it to the proper areas as well as tools etc needs organization help, I have my shower and hand sink currently draining into a "banana circle" which I want to fix up and potentially make into a grey water planter bed/pond and my "compost site" needs some re-thinking and my irrigation is currently not working.
I am really hoping to get lucky and come across someone who gets this project and wants to help contribute to moving it forward with the very limited funds/ resources I have at the moment.
As a side project, I also coach some local women in a strength building class 3 to 4 times a week which I enjoy deeply as competitive Olympic lifting is a huge passion of mine. There is not a lot of opportunity for women to gather and be involved in something together and it was really important to me to create a space for that as there are many here for men. I hoped that being able to learn a new skill like fitness would help to both give them strength and confidence and empower them to realizing they have more control over their lives than they may have been led to believe.
Lastly, I am terrible with social media but as in this world it seems like some kind of presence like that is required, I would love anyone who has skills to help me set that up and tips on how to manage it....what I should post, when I should post it, how to "market" it. Essentailly a little plan ie You need one post like this every Monday, one like that every Tuesday....to maybe help me create some interest and funding as I am funding this entire project on my own and continue to plan to do but of course would not reject help there!
While my big plan is not a money making one, it is my goal to try to figure out a way to create enough income to be stable here. Whether that's by selling campsites, having a juice bar, selling my organic fruits and veggies (there is no organic produce in the area whatsoever). So helping me to pinpoint how I can bring these ideas together or how to focus on the most profitable and highlight them through social media would be exceptional.
Truly my overall goal is to be able to offer some education and space to the people of this village and really bring value to the community. It is my belief that knowledge belongs to the people and if I have had the opportunity to amass such knowledge then it is my duty as part of the human family to share that. And as long as I can share that with as many humans beings as possible that's really all I care about. Not trying to monetize it and bank in on some "insta-guru" craze.
I have been so so blessed in my own life and I feel that I know it is my purpose to give back and be of service.
Just trying to figure out how to get that done ;)

I can offer different kinds of accommodation depending how much work you are willing/able to put in. If you are willing to give 5 hours a day for instance, I have an air-conditioned, double bed with a closet and wifi access, shared kitchen/bathroom and would be willing to cover basic simple meals which you would have to cook yourself. We will certainly be able to share meals at times when schedule allows but would not necessarily be every day.
Everything would scale back from there. Although I do have a set running list of projects that need to be accomplished everything is negotiable, I want you to be happy and not feel as though you're being taken advantage of. Feeling both a give and a take.
The downstairs bed is the available space I have indoors and requiring the largest time commitment.
I also have two tents, one 4 person and one 2 person with plenty of space to pitch them outside. I can provide pillows, sheets and a thin foam mattress with the tents if that is something you need. The tent space will require 3 hours of work.
*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️Please be aware that this homestead is located in a rural area. If you are unfamiliar with what the Nicaraguan country side is like this means there are animals of all kinds making noise throughout the night. Saturday and Sunday nights are also nights that the hostel next door has loud music playing late into the night*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️
Lastly all Volunteers are subject to a 3 day trial period. This is so that you and I can see how we are working together, if you like the space and the set up and whether or not we want to continue working together. In this way no one feels stuck and we both have permission to ask for what we need!
The property is located 5 minutes walking from one of the best beach breaks in Nicaragua as well as many other breaks for all levels and I can help hook you up with rentals for anything you may need boards, boats, motorbikes you name it. (of course that is a separate cost to you)

As a workawayer here you will be absorbing local culture by living in this small remote village. You will also be able to practice Spanish language skills, learn about gardening, how to raise chicken, grow food, compost, how the municipal systems function (or don't). There is plenty of knowledge to go around. I am also a personal trainer, nutrition counselor, advanced cook and practiced mediator and more than happy to trade skills in this way as well.
Permaculture knowledge and experience
Social media Expertise
Depending on what you are willing to commit for hours and skills we can negotiate what works for you. It is important to me that workawayers feel they are contributing but not being taken advantage of. For someone who is willing to contribute 1 to 2 hours of work, I can offer a tent to sleep in with pillows and a mattress as well as access to outdoor and indoor shower and bathroom. For someone who is willing to offer 5 or more hours of work I am happy to offer a double bed inside my house with A/C and wifi access as well as full access to the kitchen and food.
We can negotiate anything in between dependent on skills, experience and willingness/ability to work.
While you're not working there is plenty to do around. You are welcome to take one of my fishing poles and try your luck on a local point or hop in a boat to catch something a little more off shore. Take a motorbike on the beach to nearby towns such a Juiquilillo, surf, attend my strength classes and explore the many restaurants/local eateries in the area. There are also local busses that run in the mornings to Chinandega. You can feel free to take a bus at 7:00 or 5:30 am and explore the near by city.

All new guests are required to review the following upon arrival. Thank you!
The purpose of this community is to provide a safe and drug free environment for travelers and locals to come together to share and learn about all forms of self love/self care, caring for the environment/being good stewards and practicing our most ancient traditions as tribal beings of planet earth raising food, caring for our bodies and contributing positively to our land. Through working together with the common goal to give back to our great provider Mother Earth, we hope to learn about ourselves and each other, share culture and language and inspire others to live lightly and walk humbly through life as we strive to achieve this ourselves.
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Wake up is 7am and Quiet hours start after 10pm. Please be respectful of all our guests by remaining quiet between 10pm-7am.
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Please do not smoke in the vicinity of the food plants or any of the indoor areas including the tents.
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Please always take off shoes before entering the indoor spaces.
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Following trash protocol is imperative as there is no municipal trash system. Find me for an explanation of how this works!
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Clean up after yourself in the kitchen as bugs will steal food wherever they can find it! ;)
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Return everything to where you originally found it. Things like to be in their homes!
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Art projects are ALWAYS appreciated but please ask before creating any artful additions to the space. Think co-creation :)
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Please limit water use while brushing teeth (turn off faucet), washing dishes (scrub dishes and then rinse) and limiting shower times. We have a small water tank and enkeeping with our desire to live lightly and in harmony with our environment we must only use what is necessary and nothing more.
*️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️Absolutely NO DRUGS OR ALCOHOL on the property. If you would like to leave the property to have a drink this is of course your own choice but will only be tolerated so long as you are able to fulfill your responsibilities as a workwayer the following day and that you do not return to the property overly intoxicated or disturb myself or the other guests. This space should be a safe space for everyone and as there are residents in recovery here it is very important that we respect their needs in order to help them maintain their sobriety.
Let us all be mindful this is a shared space with guests from all different backgrounds. Let’s make this an opportunity to celebrate our differences and learn from each other with open compassionate hearts as we could all use a little more kindness and a little less judgement.
