This scenic village, just south of Esmeraldas, Ecuador, is a surfer’s dream. There’s a legendary left-hand point break for hardcore boarders and consistent smaller wave break for beginners.

November through April is peak season when the northwest and west swells are the strongest. With a warm and humid climate virtually year-round, there’s really not a bad time to visit, though the surf can be as flat as a pancake. A sleepy community of fishers means lots of unspoiled coastline, lush wildlife, and fresh local food.

Mompiche offers homegrown hostels and local food but keep in mind, it’s island time: don’t be surprised if local amenities aren’t available when you want them. Fortunately, that mellow vibe also extends to the water: there’s a lot of courtesy when you’re out on the waves and locals will likely offer to let you take a nice one; don’t forget to return the consideration!
