    Description

A friend and I have opened a craft cafe in Retreat, Cape Town. The cafe offers customers the opportunity to practice crafts such as fabric painting in a cafe setting. We primarily employ young adults who have some physical or mental disability, as there is a huge shortage of employment opportunities for people with special needs.

The cafe only opened in July 2018, so everything is still fairly new, but initial indications are that it will do very well. The cafe offers a warm and loving environment, with lots of new challenges every day as we learn how to function as a sustainable business. Volunteers will gain invaluable experience working with disabled young adults from a variety of backgrounds, and could also gain experience in social media marketing. All while supporting these wonderful people who otherwise would have very little chance of getting meaningful employment!

We are looking for volunteers who could assist in one (or both) of two areas. Our most important need is for someone to run our social media sites and marketing, for example facebook ads, instagram etc. This would include taking some pics or videos, so some level of experience in social media and video editing would be necessary. Secondly, we are always on the lookout for volunteers to assist with training and supporting the young adults "on the job". This would entail working at the cafe and assisting the young adults with basic skills - for example, in the kitchen, serving clients, or assisting clients with one of the crafts. For this type of work, the most important skills are to have a love and empathy for working with people who are disabled, and a love of arts or crafts.

You will stay at home with my husband and myself (as our two girls have qualified and left home a few years back). We have a very comfortable home nearby in Meadowridge, and you will have your own bedroom and bathroom. There is public transport (train) if you want to go through to town or out along the coast. We will gladly provide meals for the duration of your stay (mostly vegetarian but we do eat fish), or you can cook your own meals if you prefer.

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful, vibrant, cosmopolitan and inte(resting cities in the world, so there is plenty to see and do, regardless of what interests you have (including outdoors, culture, music, markets, sport etc).
