    Description

We are located on Vancouver Island in the foothills below the Comox Glacier, 6 km. from the ocean and have hosted travelling helpers for 21 years. Accommodation is a rustic and basic bright loft in the bicycle building workshop. (Unheated but with plenty of quilts and a hot water bottle, plus the house is warmed with a cozy wood cook stove in cool weather.) We have several garden plots, a greenhouse, fruit trees and a walnut tree. I am a writer, a folk musician and a community and social justice advocate and Ross is a peace activist, an alternative bicycle designer, specializing in electric power assist and recumbent bicycles and utility cycling. The tasks depend on the season and include general gardening work such as compost making, planting, weeding, mulching, harvesting, fence repair, plus firewood, bicycle repair, help in the kitchen and occasionally some house work. This past spring we acquired chickens so we now have our own eggs. We eat local fish, chicken, meat and organic vegetables and fruit. There are wilderness outdoor recreational activities close by, including hiking, skiing, mountain biking and swimming. There are cultural events in the village of Cumberland, 3 km. away, and in Courtenay, 9 km. away. We have bikes to lend and there is a local bus system. We share our house with one cat. As we are a small place we are open to shorter stays. We request that helpers please refrain from using chemically scented products while staying with us.

There is always plenty of stimulating chatter about a large range of topics such as healthy eating, world politics, peace activism, the environment and climate change. And of course travel, gardening, cooking and family histories. As I was born in India I love to talk about Indian culture and politics and Ross is especially keen on fitness and exercise.
