Varkala is a quiet and isolated sandy expanse where you can relax without the crowds and bustle of some of the busier beaches in Kerala. The mineral springs near Varkala Beach are considered to have medicinal properties, and many people come here to drink, and bath in the spring. The landscape in Varkala is unique, with a high rocky cliff ending abruptly and a stretch of clear sand extending down to the sea. The contrast between the cliffs, sand and sea makes Varkala Beach a striking and memorable sight.

During you time off you can enjoy the local area:

There are many beaches around the area. Scooters and bicycles can easily be rented to check out the surrounding area.

Ponnumthuruthu (Golden) Island - About 10km south of Varkala, this island in the middle of a backwater lake is home to the Shiva-Parvati Hindu temple, also known as the Golden Temple. It's closed to non-Hindus but the main reason to venture down here is the scenic punt-powered boat ride to and around the island.

Janardhana Temple - Varkala is a temple town and Janardhana Temple is the main event – its technicolour Hindu spectacle hovers above Beach Rd. It’s closed to non-Hindus, but you may be invited into the temple grounds where there is a huge banyan tree and shrines to Ayyappan, Hanuman and other Hindu deities.

Varkala Aquarium - Varkala's new aquarium, between Black Beach and Odayam Beach, has large tanks, viewed from a spiralling walkway, that are full of exotic species including piranha, sea snakes, scorpion fish and the local karimeen. A worthwhile diversion from the beach.

Sivagiri Mutt - Sivagiri Mutt is the headquarters of the Shri Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, the ashram devoted to Shri Narayana Guru (1855–1928), Kerala’s most prominent guru. This is a popular pilgrimage site and the resident swami is happy to talk to visitors.

Anchuthengu And Anjengo Fort - If you’re into history, then Anjengo fort is a place where you can spend a couple of hours unraveling the good old time. Once an important site for the British Empire, the fort, today stands tall. The fort is clean, well maintained and is a must visit place, when in Varkala.

Varkala Lighthouse - Climb up some 250 odd stairs and get bowled over by the stunning panoramic view of the humongous Arabian Sea and Kerala’s stunning landscape.

Parasailing - Glide over breathtaking views along the cliffs with a professional.

Surfing - Varkala is the surfing hub of Kerala and there are many surfing schools which will get you started in no time.

Walk the North Cliff - With an amazing beach view on one side and interesting cafes and shop on the other a walk throughout the North Cliff is a must and may just help you plan your evenings.
