*** We are currently seeking an experienced garden manager for the upcoming season and beyond. Wage will be based on experience, between $600-2000/mo plus room and board. Please reach out for more information!***
This is a wellness community that promotes ecological and spiritual health through land stewardship, organic cooking, yoga, and outdoor recreation. We operate on multi-generational farmland in Dorchester, New Hampshire, practicing methods of permaculture to cultivate a vibrant, edible landscape. Our volunteer program offers individuals an opportunity to grow and eat organic produce, practice cooperation and land-based skills, and cultivate a reciprocal relationship with the natural environment.
WORK
Workawayers are expected to work 26 hours per week, plus a minimum of 2-5 hours of cooking and cleaning per week. General help will make NH state minimum wage. We are currently hiring a full-time garden manager, please reach out with a description of your experience and work history to be considered for this role.
PLEASE NOTE Agriculture can be tedious! We do our best to offer a variety of meaningful work to volunteers; however, many tasks will require patience and persistence. Organic gardening means lots of weeding.
We have year-round work in animal care, housekeeping, construction, forestry, and woodworking. We can accept volunteers throughout the year, with limited availability during December-February.
Help can expect to contribute the following garden tasks by month:
February/March: soil mixing, seeding annual vegetables, herbs, and flowers in soil blocks, water and maintain seedlings daily, fruit tree pruning, maple tree tapping and sap collection
April: continue seeding, continue pruning, continue nursing seedlings, preparing fields for planting with soil amendments and bed shaping tools, remove grass roots from garden beds
May: finish seeding, finish preparing fields, begin planting
June: finish planting, weeding with hoes and by hand, daily watering and irrigation maintenance
July: weeding and daily watering, begin harvest of herbs and annual vegetables
August-November: harvest vegetables and herbs, food and herb preservation, clearing and haying fields for winter
MEALS
We cook with organic and locally sourced food when possible and can reasonably accommodate dietary restrictions. Please let us know your dietary needs and expectations you have before arriving. Most meals are vegetarian. Workawayers can expect to cook at least two meals per week for the house, and contribute to kitchen clean-up each night. Breakfast is self-serve from our kitchen; lunch and dinner are made for the whole house by one member.
We are located in a rural area! Staff can provide transportation to the farm from White River Jct, VT or Plymouth, NH for volunteers without a car.
During personal time, workawayers are encouraged to utilize on-site spaces: an extensive library,
woodworking shop, craft room, yoga room, and blacksmith shop.
Outdoor recreation enthusiasts can enjoy our proximity to: extensive mountain bike and XC ski trails, swimming holes, the Rumney crags, and Mt. Moosilauke. Rides can be organized within the farm to offsite destinations.
