    Description

Opened on February 1, 2015, Academy is a private school located on the island of Roatan, Honduras. The school provides a K-11 bilingual school to children whose families are affected by HIV/AIDS, or who are bright students living in extreme poverty. The school is completely free to the families of the students who attend, with all funding coming solely from gracious donors who believe in the importance of educating the youth.

Featuring a new campus with an expanded library, a healthy breakfast and lunch program, and a well-rounded program of studies, students follow a Canadian curriculum in English as well as a Honduran curriculum for Spanish. This allows them to qualify for better paying jobs in Roatan’s flourishing tourism industry and beyond! This is your chance to make a difference with some of the most disadvantaged children and spend time in an island paradise! Our Volunteer Coordinator and long-time teacher, Miss Ashlee, is always happy to answer any questions you might have.

Academy is looking to fill a few long-term teaching positions for the 2024 school year. We are in need of a kindergarten teacher, a grade 1-4 English teacher, a computer teacher, and a music teacher. These are all paid positions (to be discussed with our director during the interview process). Below are the descriptions of each of the positions:

The kindergarten teacher would be in charge of a classroom of 12-15 bright, young faces ranging from ages 4-6. You should teach these kids all of the basics, giving them a strong foundation for the elementary years, particularly in the English language. For many of them, this is their first introduction to an organized school setting, so we want it to be enjoyable and memorable while setting them up for the best school career possible.

The grade 1-4 English teacher must be a highly motivated and talented individual. You would have a mixed grade 1/2 class for half of the day and a mixed grade 3/4 class for the other half of the day. You would be in charge of planning and executing engaging lessons in language arts, math, science. Most of our students are hands-on learners, so it is important to be creative and do more than just read and take notes.

The computer teacher will plan and execute biweekly lessons for grades 1-11. This might be parts of a computer and what a computer is used for in grade 1/2, to digital citizenship for middle grades, all the way through coding or programming for the senior class (these are just suggestions, of course). When not teaching computer classes, you will be doing one-on-one tutoring with students who need extra help in other subjects.

The music teacher will plan and execute weekly lessons for grades 1-11. This should include, but is not limited to, songs for fun, songs to perform, rhythm exercises, and simple dances. The music teacher is also in charge of planning our Mother’s Day Concert and Graduation Concert (don’t worry, we will guide you). When not teaching computer classes, you will be doing one-on-one tutoring with students who need extra help in other subjects.

Remember, the school year runs from February to November, and we are really needing teachers who can commit to the entire 2024 school year – you’d be surprised how connected you can become with these kids and vice versa! While teaching experience is not required, a love of children certainly is. The ideal candidates must be creative, flexible, hard-working, and have a true passion for making kids feel loved and helping them learn. You can make a real difference here but must be up for the challenge! If you are interested in learning more about any of these long-term positions, or have any questions about short-term volunteering, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Miss Ashlee :)
