    Description

    We are an association in Saint Louis (in the north of Senegal) whose objective is to help kids (those under 18 years) to develop and have a better future. We started aiding girls with conflicts at home, but as they sometimes have kids themselves, the project got bigger and the association now includes a school for young kids, since in Senegal only children aged 7 and older can enrol in public schools.

    Thus, we have several projects running simultaneously:
    - Sheltering the girls who needed to leave their homes;
    - Mediation with the family aiming at the girl returning home;
    - Educating (in microenterprise and literacy) the ones that need to begin supporting themselves;
    - Help them to find a source of income, generally by starting a micro enterprise;
    - Search for sponsors for the children's education and to start the micro enterprises;
    - Providing nursery school for the small children

    ////////////////////

    Notre association se trouve à Saint-Louis, au Nord du Sénégal. Nous venons en aide aux jeunes filles dont la situation familiale est conflictuelle et qui sont parfois mères elles-mêmes. Nous prenons en charge leurs enfants et aujourd’hui, nous gérons également l’éducation d’enfants défavorisés de la maternelle à l’école élémentaire, grâce à la mise en place d’une école.
    Actuellement, nous hébergeons des jeunes filles chassées de leur foyer, essayant de renouer le lien familial. Nous accueillons, conseillons et offrons un soutien psychologique aux jeunes filles mères. Nous leur proposons des formations professionnalisantes et prenons en charge leur enfant grâce à des parrainages franco-sénégalais. Enfin, nous gérons l’éducation d’enfants défavorisés dans notre école d’excellence.

    Travellers would be able to integrate into Senegalese society, living as a local. Also, since the association is located at Pikine, a humble and lively neighborhood that is also the most populated area of Saint-Louis, and we help the people in need, you will be able to learn about their way of living and how most senegalese families live.
    You will also benefit from Senegalese Teranga (hospitality), famous around the world, as each person you'll meet wants to interact and welcome the visitors.
    You can also learn or improve your French and Wolof, the official Senegalese languages, and maybe other senegalese languages as Pular and Serer if you desire.
    You can learn how to cook and taste Senegalese food.
    You can develop or improve your skills to deal with children and how to teach. We are open to new ideas and will be happy to hear your ideas of how to improve things we do or new things we could do.
    Also, the benefit of teaching kids is that you see they enjoying and immediately using the things you taught them, and you know that this will make a change in their lives: they will have more chances if they know English, for example.
    We would like for you to leave here your fingerprint and to know how gratifying this work is.

    //////////////////////

    Vous serez intégrés à la vie sénégalaise et accueillis chaleureusement par les sénégalais, célèbres pour leur Teranga (hospitalité). L’expérience sera d’autant plus riche que nous sommes localisés dans le quartier de Pikine, un des quartiers les plus défavorisé et peuplé de Saint-Louis. Vous pourrez apprendre le wolof, la langue nationale du Sénégal et peut-être le Pular ou le Serer, qui sont parlés par les ethnies vivant à Saint-Louis. Vous découvrirez aussi la cuisine sénégalaise traditionnelle : notre cuisinière est toujours ravie de partager ses astuces ! Vous travaillerez continuellement aux côtés des enfants, ce qui est une expérience unique, enrichissante et très utile. L’éducation est porteuse d’espoir, les progrès des enfants sont de magnifiques encouragements en retour du travail fourni et la maîtrise du français et de l’anglais sont des atouts indéniables pour leur réussite.
    Nous sommes ouverts à toute proposition pour enrichir notre action et nous sommes ravis lorsqu’un volontaire laisse son empreinte, donc n’hésitez pas à venir nous apporter votre perspective sur notre travail !

  • Help

    Help

    We welcome volunteers of any background as all kinds of help are important for us. Here is a non extensive list of activities in which we need volunteers:
    - Teach English or French at the kindergarten and primary school;
    - Help to develop kids at the kindergarten (teaching and playing with them)
    - Help improving work at the administration
    - Improve our website and social medias
    - Improve our fundraising
    - Make a video of the institution (preferably professional)
    - Help with summer camp
    - Any other activity you want to propose (i.e.: health classes or health check if you are a nurse...)

    We received lots of volunteers in the past, but usualy for short stay. We would like some volunteers to stay longer (from 2 months up to 1 year), specially for the teaching activities.

    Please contact us and let's discuss what you can do to help. ;)

    //////////////////////

    Nous accueillons tous les volontaires souhaitant nous aider, quelques soient leurs compétences. Voici les missions que nous pouvons confier aux volontaires :
    - Enseigner l’anglais et le français
    - S’occuper des enfants à l’école maternelle
    - Participer à la gestion administrative
    - Gérer le site internet et la communication sur les réseaux sociaux
    - Récolter des financements
    - Réaliser une vidéo présentant l'association
    - Participer au camp d’été
    Mais si vous souhaitez proposer d’autres types d’aides, elles seront les bienvenues !
    Nous avons hébergé de nombreux volontaires jusqu’à ce jour et nous aimerions maintenant accueillir des volontaires pour une plus longue durée (2 mois – 1 an), notamment pour les activités d’enseignement.
    N’hésitez pas à nous contacter pour en discuter !

    Accommodation

    Volunteers are located either in the kindergarten, next to the association's office, or in an other animation center (600m far from the kindergarten), or in one of the member's home. Rooms have 1 or 2 beds each, with common bathroom. There is electricity, taped water and Wi-Fi in the kindergarten (to use wisely). We provide and eat lunch and dinner together and you can join us if you want. But if you prefer to cook for yourself, you can buy the ingredients nearby and use our kitchen. During the week, the children start arriving at kindergarten by 8 a.m., but the weekends and the afternoon are more calm because after 1 p.m. we don't have classes.

    Les volontaires sont logés soit dans l’école maternelle à côté des activités sociales de l’association (bureau, place de restauration, etc.), soit dans un centre annexe d’animation (à 600m de l’école maternelle), soit chez un des membres de l’association. Nous proposons des chambres d’un ou deux lits chacune avec salles de bains communes. Il y a l’eau et l’électricité, et le wifi dans le bâtiment de l’école maternelle (à utiliser avec modération). Vous pourrez partager nos repas à midi et le soir, mais il vous est également possible d’utiliser la cuisine pour préparer vos repas. En semaine, les enfants commencent à 8h, mais c’est plus calme l’après-midi à partir de 13 heures et le week-end étant donné qu’il n’y a pas classe.

    What else ...

    The travellers can enjoy their free time in St. Louis in the touristic and historical places. The city has a rich artistic environment with music events, artistic exhibitions, local costumes shops, restaurants, museums, historical sites and colonial architecture.

    The Saint-Louis Jazz Festival is the most important jazz festival in Africa. You can have a good time and enjoy it if you come in May.

    Among Saint-Louis’ numerous natural sites you can visit are the National Park of the Langue de Barbarie, the National Park of the Birds of Djoudj, the Fauna Reserve of Gueumbeul, beaches like that of the Langue de Barbarie, the colonial waterworks at Makhana, the palace of Baron Roger at Richard-Toll, the Diama Dam, and various hunting lodges on the south side of the Senegal River.

    Les volontaires pourront profiter de leur temps libre à Saint-Louis pour visiter les sites touristiques. Saint-Louis est une ville historique (patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco) mais aussi très active artistiquement (expositions, festivals) et culturellement (artisanat, musées). Le festival de jazz de Saint-Louis en mai est le plus important d’Afrique. Aux alentours de Saint-Louis, de nombreuses destinations valent le coup : la langue de Barbarie, la réserve de Gueumbeul, le parc national aux oiseaux de Djoudj, les villages en bordure du fleuve et Sénégal…
