    Description

We are the Bruewer family: Anne (*1985), Jonas (*1986) and our 2 children (*2018 and *2020). We live in Ahrensburg, a small and quiet town in the North-east of Hamburg. We have a house with a huge natural garden and a lot of nature around. In 2020 we founded our own concept of learning German as a foreign language. We call it SPRACHBAD which means something like "immersion" or "to take a bath in the language". Our concept is to unite language theory with practical training and individual language classes with daily life situations. For more information on SPRACHBAD please check out our website sprachbad.org.
However, there is a lot to be done in order to get things working plus a lot more things that are necessary in a household with 2 children to keep the normal life organized. So we are looking for people to support us with our projects as well as people to help us with the childrens' and household care, as you can read below.
Some things you should know about us: We love to be outside in the forest or work in the garden where we care for our chicken, cultivate some fruits and vegetable or realize some creative or a little bit crazy projects. We are both very sociable and love to hang out with our friends, neighbours or family, organize game evenings or barbecues in the garden. In our free time we also like to go on excursions and explore the surroundings or other places like the Baltic Sea.
Jonas is an occupational therapist. Also, he is a big music-lover, plays the guitar and sings and loves to dance. Anne is a qualified teacher for German as a foreign language. At the same time she is fascinated about foreign languages and other cultures and loves learning and speaking new languages. We both love meeting new people and exchange our ideas. Especially since we cannot travel that much anymore it is a great way for us to hear about different views on life and get new inspiration.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

As our children are still small we are often at home with them. It is a great opportunity for you to speak German if you want to. You can join us for our family meals and for some excursions if there is the opportunity for that.
Anne is a certified teacher for German as a foreign language so if you want to improve your German you have a professional guide at your side.
We live in a very open minded and friendly neighbourhood and have very good and close connections to our neighbours. They come around to help us with the chicken or we work together on garden projects. They always have time for a chat so this is a great chance for our guests to get in contact with German speakers. Also, Jonas' family and many friends live nearby, so another opportunity to meet people and learn about different German lifestyles.

  • Help

    Help

There are several fields in which we could need some help. Most important for us at the moment is someone who is
    (1) a skilled manual worker and (very) good at working with wood as our biggest projects this summer are to renovate our terrace and to construct a carport. Moreover we need help with renewing a path in the garden and with renovating several places in the house.
    (2) We can always make use of someone who can help us in the garden: Opening, closing and cleaning the chickens`shed, mawing grass, cultivating vegetables etc.
    (3) Additionally some help with the household cores would be nice: Cooking, cleaning etc.
    (4) A nice extra would be someone who likes to be with children and who could accompany them for example whilst we are working outside or at the PC.

No worries, you don't need to fulfill all of these requests. Just let us know what are your strengths and interests and we'll see if and how we could make use of them.
Important for us is that you are an open minded, friendly, sociable person that likes to be surrounded by kids and nature :-).

This host offers a language exchange
Especially Anne is very keen on improving her language skills. In exchange she can explain you some funny details of her mother tongue German. Jonas can teach you a lot of German songs. And children are the best partner for listening to easy language, anyways.

A big plus of Ahrensburg is that it is near to and well connected with Hamburg. From the train station you can reach Hamburg main station in only 15 minutes. We can lend you a bike so that you can easily get around, to the train station (15 minutes) etc. So you have this big cultural metropole right in front of the door for endless excursions and explorations.

Moreover, Ahrensburg is only 45 minutes from the Baltic Sea so you might go on an excursion to some of the beaches or towns there if the weather is nice. The famous Hanse city Lübeck is only 30 minutes by train plus the many beach towns such as Timmendorfer Strand etc. There are a lot of things to explore, such as Underwater worlds, Wildlife parks, Adventure parks and many more.

Around Ahrensburg you can find some forests, moors and lakes. There are some biological farms that can be visitted for a coffee and in some nearby towns you can also find some cultural highlights as a cinema, theatre etc. Most of them can be reached by bus, train or bike.
