    Description

We are Tierra and Dave and we run an all-natural vegetable farm located in rural Cape Breton, NS. Our goal is to grow delicious and healthy produce for ourselves and the community while living a simple and harmonious life.

During the summer of 2016 we were work traders on an organic farm in BC and learned that we wanted to create a similar homestead and farm lifestyle for ourselves. We've since moved to Nova Scotia and started our own small, non-certified organic CSA farm/market garden. We are looking for people that are interested in learning how to grow organic produce and give us a hand in the spring, summer and/or fall.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are hoping to offer a reciprocal learning experience for our guests. We offer the opportunity to learn about organic growing practices, as well as the basics of seed starting, transplanting, watering, mulching, harvesting, etc. and welcome any knowledge or wisdom that our volunteers have to offer. An added bonus for guests is being able to stay in one of the most scenic parts of Canada. Cape Breton is known for it's incredible landscapes and outdoor life and has a lot to offer during the spring, summer, and fall.

We ask for our workawayers to invest about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week depending on the weather and tasks. Throughout the season we require help with prepping garden beds, seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, mulching, harvesting, washing, preserving, building, and other farm and homestead related tasks as they come up. We also run a small CSA that we deliver every Friday. It is important to note that the days can sometimes be hot and some jobs can be tedious. This is an opportunity for people who have a good work ethic and don't mind getting their hands dirty. We offer free room and board and breakfast and lunch on work days. Volunteers are expected to prepare their own dinners, however we like to have communal meals every once in a while. As well, we provide a fully stocked kitchen of grains, beans, lentils, etc. and have a large variety of garden produce for volunteers to use for their own meals.

Breakfast at the main house starts at 8am where we like to have breakfast while discussing the day ahead. Lunch usually comes from whatever we can harvest from the gardens and is ready around noon.

We have a fully stocked camper for volunteers, which is well suited for couples or friends, however if you are a solo worker we do not expect you to share the space. We also have space for people to bring their own campers, buses, tents, etc. if they want. The kitchen and shower facilities are in the main house, however there is a composting toilet on the property.

There is an abundance of activities in the area. We are centered between 2 towns, Inverness and Cheticamp. English and French are the main languages. We are just a 5 minute walk from a lovely pebble beach and a 10 minute walk to the large sandy beach. The area offers a lot to do during the summer including hiking, swimming, SUP, kayaking, whale watching, floats down the river, archery, micro breweries, live music, and we are located right at the foot of the world famous Cabot Trail.
