Area: OntarioJan 29, 2014 update: We just accepted two people. We are now probably full until May 1. But we may have a spot March 21-31. We are a 8-person vegetarian community house in Toronto. Toronto is a great place to visit with vibrant neighbourhoods, bike-friendly streets, lots of festivals, farmers' markets, waterfront parks and an island park you can reach by ferry. etc. We are a house with a current age range of mid 20's to early 50's. We prefer to have visitors that are similar in age, say about 23 or older, so they can fit in nicely. We are especially open to people who are keen to try a plant-based diet. Most of us are experienced vegetarians who are open to helping new people. Every week there are 3 or 4 dinners (feasts) and several smaller meal preparations. We typically shop at farmers' markets and food co-ops. We also have an environmental focus -- we are into natural building, avoiding plastic packaging and products, and not wearing/using chemically-scented products. Are you OK with a chemical-free home? i.e: no perfumes, or scented soups, shampoos? Unless natural and organic. We have two chemically-sensitive people here. Includes high speed internet, house phone and laundry soap. We have guest bikes available. To support a peaceful atmosphere, we are looking for those wanting to live without the distraction or temptation of TV and radio, cigarettes and alcohol. Our house is owned by one of the residents, who uses most of the proceeds to support the Veggie Challenge, an international charitable project that assists people who want to try a vegetarian or vegan diet. We are located on a quiet street (1 block from the subway and very close to downtown). We have a large tree-shaded front porch and back deck. Our three storey house has eight bedrooms, a guest room and two bathrooms (soon to be three). We have an infrared cedar sauna and workshop in the basement. Ecological features include using Bullfrog Power (green energy provider), front load washing machine, clothes lines for drying, low flush toilets, efficient fireplace insert where on cool nights we can burn scrap wood, a vegetable garden, and a low-on-the-food-chain vegetarian/vegan kitchen with an emphasis on organics and locally-grown foods. Help: We looking for about 4 hours per day in exchange for a sunny room, full use of the house and basic food ingredients. Our shared food is cooked from scratch, so the more help we get the better we all eat. :-) We can provide some training, and timing of work is flexible.

Area: OregonWe have openings for this spring, summer and fall. Our Farm borders thousands of acres of national forest land and features: an organic garden; an original homestead house built in 1909 (currently under renovation), 7 yurts; a wood-fired hot tub; open meadows and forests (walking trails connect the varying mix of conifers and hardwoods); campsites; main living quarters; barn and workshop; and a children's play area. A year round creek flows through the property and our drinking water comes from a natural mountain spring. The farm hosts 2 annual Songwriting Camps and other events. 2014 is our 5th season developing the farm. During the past years we have completed the following projects: garden expansion (slash pile removal, building rock walls, and developing the garden layout); yurt construction (building platforms, yurts and decks); constructing the hot tub structure; forestry management (tree limbing, removal, and chipping); trail building; renovating the main house and the original homestead. About Us We are a couple with a 4 year old child and an adult son. Jim is American and Britta is from Germany. In addition to the farm, we also own and operate the Northwest Portland International Hostel and Guesthouse. We spend time at both our hostel in Portland and the farm. Our combined expertise and skills are: carpentry, business management, organizational management, downhill and cross country skiing, and child rearing. We are non smokers and conscious of what we eat. Languages spoken are English and German. There is an opportunity for our volunteers to arrange free overnight getaways at the hostel when visiting the city based on availability.
