Area: DrakensbergWe offer visitors a unique opportunity of a volunteer program for those of you who would like to spend a bit of time learning how to live this alternative lifestyle or would like to give something back to this wonderful world we live in. We promise to offer you the experience of a lifetime as you assist and adapt to the on going conservation work, alternative building styles, organic gardening and participate in our social responsibility program that we support. Area: Lower Austria, between St. Pölten and KremsRené (39, economist in a think tank in Vienna), Elke (32, veterinarian for swine & poultry) and Raphael (18 months, unemployed philosopher) are the happy inhabitants of a small and very old farm on the edges of the Dunkelsteinerwald (dark stone forest) in the province of Niederösterreich near Vienna. Our two horses, little pony Benjamin Black, a flock of chickens, the pigs San Daniela & Herr Crudo, a herd of turkeys, four cats and two undeniably charming Dalmatian dogs make our home quite lively (not to forget the bird families, that made our inner courtyard their homes). Coming originally from Vienna, which both of us dearly love, we can provide you with good recommendations on where to go and what to see - sightseeing, museums, going out to nice cafés and bars, to the theatre and of course you can join René to games of SK Rapid Wien, if you like football. The city is only a 10 min car and a 25 min train ride from our tiny village. For those wanting to take short trips to the surrounding area (E.g.: the famous region of Wachau at the river Danube) to trek/cycle from winery to winery, to old castles on the hills alongside the river or just visit gorgeous towns like Krems and Dürnstein by foot, we can provide you with usefull maps and tips. And if you like spending time strolling/running over fields and meadows or take a mountain bike up the wooded hills behind our farm, you'll love it here. We also just finished building a small gym for body weight training. We might just join you on a few excursions, as we are very enthusiastic about those pleasant things in life. At least as long as Raphael lets us... We grow our own fruits, veggies and meat and have a keen interest in enhancing our grade of self-sufficiency. Thus, we've built the horse and chicken stables ourselves and are continuously renovating and upgrading the farm, therefore the range of work needed (see below), is wide and of course also depends on the interest of the helper. Both of us like to spend an evening cooking with/for friends and having lively discussions about interesting topics like politics, economics, music, life and whatever comes to our mind. Please consider us as your hosts of choice only if you really are energetic adults, that take initiative, are reliable and willing to join the family rhythm! We'd also love to hear your ideas on tackling things, since we are far from being real farmers, yet... If you actively want to take part in our little project and feel like we have common interests, we are happy to have you as our guest(s)!
Area: Coimbra and CenterA rural retreat in the green heart of northern Portugal - connected to the old world, distant from the rush of the city - but not completely disconnected. For 2015 we are looking for skilled volunteers with carpentry, farm machinery and construction experience - long term stays are welcomed.
Area: Coimbra and CenterGet involved in our eco-project, half-way up Portugal's highest mountain. We're just getting started, and the weather's perfect! The site is completely off-grid, with excellent year-round water supplies, impressive terraces, a few fruit trees, and a couple of buildings - both in need of thorough renovation. But that's pretty much all we do have at the moment, aside from a clear aim to create a very comfortable and beautiful place, able to accomodate 30+ in summer, and 12-15 during the winter season. We're roughly 20 minutes from Seia, amid the stunning scenery, crystal clear lakes and rivers of the Serra da Estrela, and looking across the Alvoco, Mondego and Daõ valleys towards the Açor and Caramulo ranges. UPDATE (September 1st): Kitchen area, compost toilet and shower are all functional and a positive joy to use. We also have just enough solar power to run lights and some music. Internet is patchy, but we'll be switching network provider soon. Accommodation is still mostly in tents however, and likely to stay that way until mid/end Sept.
