Hi, I'm David from Valencia (Spain). I currently work as a music/piano teacher and study philosophy at uni, part-time, little by little...
In 2015 I volunteered via this website in France. Tasks were aimed to develope a self-sufficient community in terms of reducing to zero the need/use of money - an inspiring horizon which implied cultivating our own food, drinking filtered water from the river and using a dry toilet and eating food waste from a a supermarket nearby.
Before that, I had enrolled in an agroecological project in central Spain to reintroduce and promote autoctonous variarieties of vegetables.
Time went by and in 2023 I felt the urge to do something different, out of the kind of stable urban life I had carried out for the last years. That's when I came back to Workaway and stayed in a community called "Joy'ce Kingdom", in the Greek island of Skiathos, for some two weeks in August. Conditions in terms or commodities were spare (e.g, accomodation in a tent, no running water). It was nevertheless enriching and pleasurable to engaged in such close contact with thick Mediterranean forests (actually one of my missions there was to clear up a way, cutting off bushes and branches, so as to connect two working areas. Apart from that, I protected the flora). Other tasks I performed were building metallic storing shelves, cooking, digging a trench for cables to go through it, collecting oregano and playing.
Now It's 2024 and I keep coming back to Workaway to search volunteering chances. It's nice to rest from urban concerns, meet people in a more natural environment, help to develope more earth-rooted projects and share and learn other perspectives.

Marta:
I’m a 32 years old woman from Valencia (Spain), living and working currently as a school teacher in Barcelona since 7 years ago. Before moving here, I studied art history and music and had some international experiences (I worked in London, did an Erasmus in Krakow, and I helped with the development of a self-sufficient eco village in France). This last one really helped me to discover how much I love observing plants, working with them, and being more aware of the ways we consume and produce the resources we need for a living. That experience took me to enroll with some local urban gardens to try and contribute to the difficult task of making cities greener and more livable places. Sometimes I find myself dreaming about starting a project in nature, away from the city. Not just for the obviously desirable reasons like the quality of the air, the quietness and sense of space, but also because I like the idea of creating more harmonious and healthy ways of being in the world. Also, when I talk with my (urban) friends about those ideas, I find out that (luckily!) there seems to be such a growing feeling among them as well. The problems we always face when we dream together about another way of living are that we need to define exactly how and where to take a step like this, as it’s not always easy to take certain risks in life. That’s partly why I personally believe that, before making decisions in that direction, I need to keep learning from people who actually started projects that I find inspiring.Interests
