Area: New York StateWe have an 11 guest room Bed and Breakfast that sits at the base of Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, NY. We are literally only 500 yards from the entrance to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center. (the mountain which was host to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Events). Whiteface is the 5th highest amongst the 46 High Peaks located in the Adirondacks. Six of our guest rooms have a direct view of the ski runs and ski lifts on the mountain. We are just 8.5 miles outside of the lovely village of Lake Placid, which is host to the Olympic Sports Complex, Olympic Training Center, the Olympic Ski Jumps, Ice Skating Rinks, Bobsledding and Luge runs, etc. There are numerous ongoing sporting events, live music, festivals throughout the year, a plethora of hiking, biking, snowmobiling, cross country ski trails, beautiful vistas, mountain lakes, river gorges and something for just about everyone's enjoyment. The area is a year round destination, with summer sporting events and winter skiing being the main draw.
Area: Midi PyreneesWe're a family of five, but none of us live here permanently: Patricia (47), French-German, translator, likes to travel, especially to Asia; Pascal (53), French, water treatment engineer, has to travel for his work, often to Africa; Kilian (21), working/studying in Toulouse; Adrien (18), doing a civil service year in Toulouse, and Caroline (17), high-school student living in a boarding-house at school during the week. We live in an old farmhouse in the countryside, 35 kms South of Toulouse, between Toulouse and the Pyrenees. We have a "gîte" (a "cottage"), which is rented out by the week and usually needs to be cleaned on Saturdays (that means you can't take your free days on a Saturday). We are also renovating the house we live in and can always use a hand. There is also lots of work in the garden, weeding and mowing mostly. Our family language is French, but the five of us are also more or less fluent in English and German. We live 4 kms from the town (10.000 inhabitants) and the railway station, you can borrow a bicycle or get a ride when we drive into town. Pascal and I have both travelled extensively and lived in different countries. As a family we spent two years living in Dakar (Senegal). We like the idea of a cultural exchange and will gladly provide a bedroom, breakfast, lunch as well as a family dinner against some help with gardening, building, cleaning... We have four cats (Starsky & Hutch, who are 13, and Arya & Shaolin, who were born this summer and are very playful kittens), a few chickens and several regular visitors with dogs. We smoke, so we do of course accept smokers. But we don't want you to smoke in the bedrooms and not indoors at all during summer. We'd rather not accept families with babies or toddlers, because our house is not adapted to accommodate young children, but we have no problem with hosting couples, groups of friends, families with older kids, cats, dogs, horses... We also have lots of space for camper-vans or tents, if you travel with those. We ski, so if you like skiing, we should be going to Ax-Bonascre (in the Pyrénées) most of the winter, about once a week if the weather permits. Things you should definitely know: (seriously, read this!) Auterive, our town, is quite boring. There is not a lot going on here, really. No bars or nice cafés, just the market on Friday mornings. If you have your own car, you can have great day-trips in the area. Here, all you can do is run or cycle... or swim and lie in the sun in summer. Our kids are gone all week and like to relax on the week-ends. You can also have day-trips by train (Albi, Carcassonne...), but it is a bit more complicated. You can easily take the train into Toulouse and there are lots of Couchsurfing hosts if you want to go out in the evening and spend the night there. You are very welcome to spend your free days here and we will of course provide the food, spend some time with you and take you places if we're going somewhere, but consider yourself warned: it might be a bit boring! We are not a traditional French family. We don't have 3-course meals twice a day, we're anything but "chic" and we will very probably fall into English as soon as you get here... (Also we made our first workawayer eat horsemeat tartare :) - but he volunteered!) I'll drive you to the station or into town and pick you up and I will do my best to try and speak French with you during the day if that's what you want. We will talk about French and world politics and economics and culture, Pascal will share his very French way of finding everything better here, I will explain (and diss!) the French school system, we can recommend French music and you will meet the people passing through our house... Last but not least, because it is important: Pascal is very thorough when it comes to work. He will indeed make you sand that wall a third time for those two little specks and he will make you take out the built-in closet to paint behind it. Don't take it personally. :)

Area: northern CaliforniaSwiss, in the mid 50's, we had moved to the South of France because we fell in love with the countryside and we wanted to get away from our very hectic life in the "civilisation"! And now we have moved to northern California. We have a great place in Northern California, near Redding.
